New take on old fleet idea.

Yes I know, it's been posted everywhere. But I want to find out what people think about this idea.
Being able to build 12 ships of a slightly lower class to escort your mothership. Say at 250mil apiece. Then giving them each a weapons limit overall. IE you could build some just for def, or attack. Though without a proper balance, they CAN be destroyed.
Then, enable people to set their pref in advance as to what they should do during a attack/def. IE the following...
Ship 1 and 2, attack their ground forces.
Ship 3 and 4, defend your mothership.
5-12, attack enemy mothership.
This would add a flexability to this whole concept. Heck, it beats putting Billions of naq into the same old ship, and losing alot of those weapons in attacks/def. Have the smaller ships weapons cost less. That way, if they lose half of their shields, it doesn't cost as much to repair them.

I like it - I really do! The idea of customisable ships is great.
My only concern is the amount of coding it would take.

I'm afraid i'm not much of a programmer, so i have no idea how much coding it would take. But it would be nice to have more control over the development of my forces.

Yes, that would be cool. Plus, you wouldn't have to buy all 12....but the added flexability would make it alot more interesting... People couldn't hide behind just one kind of stat(mothership, attack, def) because someone could just order half their fleet to hit their weak area....Maybe even cloaked ones, that don't hurt much, but go after you're spy headquarters(ie, they attack your covert).

yeha lol you could order your small ships to take all the fire sent at your mothership, altematly killing it

but meaning no repairs to the mothership

Yea Thats a really good idea - any would add a whole new level to the game, it would also meant that people starting in the game can get a smaller ship to start off with and later on buy a mothership. this way they can put up some sort of resistance against motherships early in the game - because face it more and more people are getting motherships and those people who have just started playing are getting slayed by those who hav motherships.. and it takes them awhile to save enough to actually get a MS without help frm others.
But doing this would take alot of time and ages of coding, so if this were to happen i wouldnt expect it anytime soon..

Hmmm, lucky for me i'm not a programmer. lol, I didn't know that the coding requirements of this upgrade would be outstanding. Thanks everyone for your input, I really think this is an idea that perhaps could take off...

I like the idea, but I would expect this alone would be as hard as... say... all of chaos. Be ready to wait.
Think of it this way... 1 mthrshp vs another
Making the formula for them to attack is simple. Just do something along the lines of

I didn't bother balancing this at all, but you can see making a 1 vs 1 battle is simple. Now lets try making each side have 5 ships...

And then you still have to do destroyed weapons, leftover damage, and, not to mention, a crapload of code to store all the ship's damage in a player's stats, and then a seperate database code to store the raw damage of each ship, the damage each ship takes, and the amount of weapons/sheilds destroyed, and leftover damage into a battlelog. Not fun.
To do a fleet thing, it should be much simpler,and there are even a few ideas of mine which seem more complex, but that I myself have coded once in a program called "gamemaker" which you can download at
http://www.gamemaker.nl if you want it (its really nice).
Anyway, my above example is also not including the backbone of your idea, the idea that ships 1-3 do this, ships 8-9 do this, yadda yadda ya. A great idea, but a hard one.
Not to burst your bubble, just trying to shed some light. And there's no saying that admin won't do your idea anyway.

i also like this idea very interesting and would provide some nice aspects of gameplay, (i have played other MMORPG games where this idea was added and it worked to gr8 effect and was very popular) so i am all for it!

Hmmm, interesting. I have no experience in programming, just in working with intelligence(in the military, yes i know, oxy moron). I see your point, and realise that it would take a lot of changing. I still though think it would change the game for the better, Make it easier for newer players, and make it more fun for older players. Now if they can tweek the repair costs for everything....I would be greatful also...(mumbles about 20mil repair after attacking someone with 0 def....)
