Scottish Independence

Opening the floor to a very broad discussion on Scottish independence and the -expected / upcoming- referendum on it.

(Rule of thumb; stick with Scotland, if there's interest, we could have a discussion on 'independence' in general in a separate thread at a later point.)

Anyone from Scotland (or the UK in general) who'd like to start off with their idea of this initiative?

The leader of the scottish nation party is a muppet, who been calling for independence for a long time. Any one from the UK watch "Question time" on BBC, every time Alex Salmond on ,he is made to like as a joker.

UK wont let scotland have the "Oil Fields", and where will the Queen stay for her holidays???

As a continental inhabitant, I would like to know, why does Scotland want to get independence from the UK?
I don't see how it could be a handicap for them to remain in the United Kingdom... :?

I don't think, don't recall if or if not.[/spoiler]
I mean "nowadays", I know there's some history between both England and Scotland, but I would have thought what happened few centuries ago wouldn't still be a cause of mutual disappreciation.
What are the arguments of current in-favor parties to separate from the UK, is what I meant.

My post was a flippant reply pointing out the long and deep-seated feelings of many Scottish people - they are voting with their heart, not necessarily with their brain. So lighten up ;)

If you want to read more on it Pops, here might be a start:

If you cant see the seething hatred that exists in the UK then your more blind than I thought.

Hell you dont even have to look at the hatred that exists towards the English from the Welsh & Scots. You just have to look at say the hatred that exists between Liverpool & Manchester.

The UK is one big pot of nasty feelings & hatred all across the board from neighbours to rival towns/cities to rival counties and then moving up to 'national' levels.

To quote some comedian (cant recall who)

I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally

And that setiment is very UK, we dont hate particular folks, we hate everyone including ourselves

I meant the rational reasoning (economic, strategic reasons...) behind this desire of independence, but I guess RepliMagni answered that already.
