Is the game dying?

Yes you guessed it, its that time of the year again. Is the game dying? Or is it in fact dead?
Now, its been "dying" since about 06 if people are to be believed. And despite all the grumbling people are still here. People still come back. If this is dying, it ain't too bad.
But are there signs the game is actually on its way out? Half of DDE pack up and quit. Two of the biggest accounts in the game (FM and Jorg) cash out. And a few other big accs have talked about it too. Game seems perennially stuck on about 200 max online ingame. And the forum seems to have around 10-20 people online these days (half of whom are mods). I know some people have estimated 6 months and it'll be truly dead.
I know Jason has helmed quite a few failures....timesofconquest, universequest, battlecorps, etc....all come and gone. But sgw persevered. WE persevered.
Is it finally in its death throes? Or will it continue "dying" for another few years yet? Perhaps even make it to its tenth birthday? Is "dying" a matter of opinion? Does the game need a drastic overhaul to save it? Or would that ensure its demise?

This game lived dieing: it's in fact a zombie game!
Seriously, it will last as long as Admin keeps it running and a minimum of players use it.

Dead is Dead.
No the game is not dying. How long has the game shown the numbers online being in the 200's for? It's been like that for a long time. If it was dying that would continue to decrease. Admittedly it used to be much higher, but that was a long time ago.

Yes it is, well maybe run its coarse..as you look around, the top empires and alliances have been able to replace losses with new players, but what is happening is a recirculation of current ones. As I have said before the lack of new coming into GW is definately hurting DDE as we have not been able to replace the losses via recruitment. This is true everywhere.
Combine the low numbers, low new entries, same old arguments, same old wars, same ol same ol same, a line of ill timed updates and eye candy that is not..and you get what you have. Players cashing out is smart at this point.

Agreed. People always say the game is dieing. There is no 'time of the year', it's always there, ever since the game began.
It's irrelevant.
I do like the claim "it's a zombie game".

when an account sells for $1750 you know it's got a little bit longer left

Dying is harsh word, everything is dying slowly. I'd say declining, past it's prime but still has a couple of years left in it.
Always seems worse this time of year since the vast majority of players are in the northern hemisphere and enjoying the summer.

Jorg just started over and FM was due to lack of time, so completely unrelated
I agree with SS, the game has being dying since the server was open

I agree. Everything is dying from the moment it is created, humans are from the moment they are born.
Declining is a much better word. This game gets more new players than it does lose players, however, not all those new players are active.
People keep on about this game is dying because of the game itself (i.e. stupid updates etc), but it's not. I told my mate about this game the other day, he's younger than me, he's 24, and he said "people still play those games?". The simple fact is that these sort of games have little interest in a lot of people these days. And even if they do give it a try they will soon lose interest. I'd hate to think what it is like to start a new account now compared to when I started a new account in Sep 2005.
There is nothing that can be done to this game now that will increase it's popularity and keep it. Move with the times people. We're in 2011 not 2005.

Being in long drawn out wars with an enemy that doesn't bother to build anything resembling a def is what has made the game boring for me....and thankfully in 11 hours time I'll no longer care

Sounds to me like what TL and the others anti FUALL were doing in the server war, it's why I have retired then, because the game was boring.

Don't be upset if we're copying you now, personally I'm the underdog, outnumbered and outgunned (still need a lot of ascentions to catch up) but don't worry, I have patience and time to bring down all of you and the game will be fun again.

and how many current members of TL were in TL during the server war? as far as I recall neither side trained much in the way of defence then. Difference is now TL do, and the opposition (with the exception of buck) don't.
anyway, that's but the final straw really. having been witness to some of the admin meets recently, if most of the suggestions got implemented the game would be dead already.....and with Jasons track record he could decide to throw any of them in without notice. There are far too many people worried about self preservation rather then helping out the game as a whole, this sadly will be it's ultimate undoing
