Alpha's

I anyone else watching this ?

The newest version of superhero / genetically enhanced / Xmen type of dealio

In this show the 'Alphas' are people born with various powers, you might call it a watered down version of Xmen since the powers are not as super. Things like perfect hand/eye co-ordination, ability to 'push people' a kind of instant hypnosis effect, super strength but in very limited bursts before overheating, super senses but only one at a time, ability to see radiowaves and read them, etc etc. And none of the Alpha's are perfect people, they all have significant personality flaws and make lots of mistakes.

As usual you have the goodies and baddies, and the mad loners. A question has been raised as to who the goodies are, the government controlled ones or the ones trying to do their own thing. The show is based on a small group who think they are the goodies though that might change.

Not the greatest acting, not the greatest script, not the greatest anything really, but somehow I keep watching because it's strangely addictive ( plus there is not much on TV to choose from at the moment lol )

I agree there are lots of these types of shows, and yes it's not the best ( I much preferred Dark Angle and more recently No Ordinary Family ) so this probably will only last 1 series.

But it's not here to get awards or become a future classic, it's just a bit of cheesy fun, and enjoyable entertainment while it lasts.

I just wish it were interesting. Instead, I spend the whole time wishing someone would shove a sock in the Gary's mouth so I can know wth is going on. The episode last week with everyone but Gary was actually pretty good.

I think they are just character building , while building a main story line. I think they will get another season here in US anyway, its been very popular.

and I like Gary, Ive always been sensitive to radio waves :smt107 he comforts me ...

Character building is fine and good, but if it takes all season to build up these characters, it might not be soon enough to warrant a second season.

I fell asleep watching the first episode. Admittedly I was very tired at the time after 30hours up but if Breaking Bad, Falling skies, bleach and beyond can all hold my attention and prevent sleep.. and this couldn't well that was enough for me.

I just thought to myself.... another new one? Why? Why not keep SGU? I had no will to watch it but from what I saw the characters were difficult to grapple with at first and the actors seemed to struggle with their roles. The story line was interesting if not unrealistic even in a fictional universe.

I may give it a couple of seasons (if it makes it that far) to build up some momentum and then go back to it and watch it through to give it a proper judgement but atm... it's just a waste of time in my opinion.

True enough, however I think they may have an edge over the more Sci Fi themed series like Heroes with the celebrity walk-ons and the more realistic take on the genre.

I have to admit tho that I am bias. I thoroughly enjoy Gary Bell (Ryan Cartwright). I watched him in Bones and he is a great character actor. I hope that if Alphas doesnt make it that they find him a role somewhere.

Oh, I like Cartwright as an actor. Loved him in Bones. I just think the scenes where Gary interacts with regular people stretch out 5 seconds too long for me. One minute I am enjoying the interaction and the next it has lost all humor.

I love the prospect of crossover with the other Scifi shows, Warehouse 13 and Eureka. Already a minor character from Warehouse 13 has made an appearance on Alphas and Eureka and Warehouse have crossover all the time. Yay for crossovers!

Episode 7
Great to see Summer Glau on our screens again, loved her in Firefly and Sarah Connor Chronicles. Shame they made her brainy though, I kinda preferred her kicking ass.

Show seems to be warming up nicely with the 'who are the baddies really theme'. How long I wonder until the team revolt against the system they serve. Will we have a Dark Angel style breakout from Binghamton where the team free the other Alpha's ?

Also nice touch with the 'having children' dilemma. Would you want a child knowing you might have to go on the run to protect them from your own government ?
Im liking this show more as it develops.

This show is 100% going to get cancelled why......Summer Glau.....as soon as she shows up in any show it get's cancelled or it does not last much longer :smt043

But this show is getting better and i have read that they find another Alpha like
Gary
in a upcoming episode.

I am still waiting for Sylar (Heroes) though to walk though the door freeeze time nick their powers unfreeze time tell them thanks for the powers and then fly off....I know he could not freeze time in the show but this is my post and in it he killed Hero and got his powers if they carried the show on :-D

I think having a character like Gary who is autistic is quite interesting and not something many writers have ever done, especially in a scifi. It's a little slow at points but I'm interested to see where they might take it if it gets a renewal.
