What do you think people mean when they say this? Is it how history shapes our future or something? I'm trying to figure this one out.

Pretty vague and there are various versions like 'Whats Past is Prologue' 'The more things change the more they stay the same'

I would assume it means Human nature is what it is, regardless of where we are, how advanced we become, what religion or ideology we embrace we will remain at the mercy of our primitive hardwired drives & urges to expand, procreate, compete, control etc

The glib replies the same defeats
Keep your finger on important issues
With crocodile tears and a pocketful of tissues"

if your history has been peaceful and prosperous that is the destiny. if yr history isnt smth u go proud then start changing the present so it becomes history and from that arise yr destiny.

The statement cannot standalone, it requires context.

It is a very fatalistic statement in any context, and appears to imply that whatever you do, you will always keep going in the direction you have been going for ages.

Combine that with a Buddhist view and you're royally screwed. :-D Really does need a context though, I'm with Jack.

I believe that depending on your point of view, history points out a possible future among many but i personally believe that even though history is the greatest teacher, that we make our own history.

My boss was saying it at work to someone but I wasn't really listening, then i said "history is our past, our destiny lies ahead, therefore our future is our destiny." he told me to go away and think about it. So i said bugger that i'm off for a 4 day weekend! :-D

Then I came on here, posted it and get you guys to do my thinking for me. :-D

Lol could simply be a dumbass using a cliche because it sounds intelligent. I **Filtered** hate that with a passion. People using cliches without fully understanding what they're saying.

Our past does greatly influence our future. That is what I think when I see those words. Our history is our future because the actions we took, the choices we made, the experience we had all influences our future.

Our history is our destinybecause we fail to learn from the past. I hate this cliche, it takes another cliche and turns it from a warning to a statement of fact.

Our history is our destiny because all things inevitably devolve back to their original state or something similar.

Agreed, the only thing worse is 'management speak'. People who say things like..

Blue Sky Thinking
Thinking Outside the Box
Taking ownership
holistic cradle-to-grave approach
360-degree thinking
Giving 110%
Strategic staircase
Bring it to the table
There is no 'I' in team
Joined up thinking
Let get proactive

I think it just means that we are bound to make the same mistakes we made in the past.
