How often does this happen? Question about reports

Basically, I've reported two posts recently....somewhat frivolously now I look back on them, but report them I did. One was for masking, another for double-posting. They weren't worthy of a warning, and probably wouldn't have received any more than a mod posting in the threads in question....heck, I somewhat regret reporting them.

However, it was how both reports were handled that has made me curious. For both reports were read by the mod in question who was online. He then edited both posts to exclude the masking/double-posting, making my trivial complaints completely redundant.

My questions:

- After said mod has read the report and edited his posts, does the report still exist? Do other mods check them afterwards to see their severity?
- And also, how common is this? Do mods/admins often do this?

I do NOT want this to become a witch hunt. I simply want to know the protocol involved...

Just so you know, in relation to those 2 reports you made, I do not have access to read or see open reports in any section but For Admin. Therefore I did not and could not read your reports on me.

I did however, see that my posts were reported, but i saw them just like any user can see them, even you.

As for the answer to your question, I personally don't handle reports on myself, I leave them to another Mod in For Admin.

Ah, so if someone reports your post, you get alerted to it? Guess that means I've never had a post reported? lol

Well, that takes care of that concern....I must admit I had a moment of "who will watch the watchers" if you answer reports about your own posts. lmao.

Although, is it possible for a mod to do so? If it was in their section?

No users are not alerted of their own posts being reported. And I didn't indicate that either.

Well that was a singularly unsatisfactory answer because you must know the next thing I'm going to ask is therefore: how did you know your post had been reported?

And the other question remains: is that possible for a mod to mod themselves and the report disappear?

You said you saw they were reported.
How, if they weren't in your section? :?

(Okay, Magni asked that. Anyway.)

The way I do it:
!Report! => Check validity and broken rule.
Depending on rule broken => edit post (if profanity)
Close Report => Send message to reporter with either explanation or "handled".

If you complain that it is raining, and someone hands you an umbrella, does that make your earlier complaint invalid? Not really.. I'd say it's a way of handling the situation that allows threads to remain active, without slamming the lid on them because of a mild transgression. (If it weren't a mild transgression, I'd copy the post, edit the original post, give a warning and keep the unedited version for reference.)

Click the report button on your post. If it says already reported tadah its reported. Also a mod modding themselves is called editing your own post. Its allowed btw

Yay! *gives Jason a cookie*

As I said, just like any other user can see them.

omg. You are kidding. :? That would mean you click on the report button for all your posts?!
That can't be right. I mean. That's a waste of time. :|

lol no-one said they did that. But I had an "incling" for those two particular posts would be reported. Don't ask me why, i just knew someone would take a shot.

But what if the report is of something that a normal user would receive a warning for? A mod receives the report, edits their post, deletes the report, and then....what? No warning?

@Clarkey, wow...that takes some dedication....hitting report on your own posts?! Admittedly, they were cheap shots....but I can be petty sometimes :P

Yes mods can mod themselves in their own section, though we don't. when it comes to reports when they are handled they are closed not deleted so they can be seen again by admin.

Yup. Can't escape the all-seeing eye. If someone says "But I reported that post first!", we can still see whether that's right or not. Admins/GMs can then talk to the 'offending' mod. It's a bit of a gap. Best thing is to prevent people report you, but then, we have a bunch of petty people who'd report just about anyone around here. ;) Nothing against them, or reporters, or mods, but some go out of their way to report you for the littlest thing. And that is their good right. I used to PM people when their posts were reported, asking them to edit their posts. If they didn't, I generally warned them. :)

Thanks SS, that just about covers it all

Thanks everyone for the coherent and rational answers...nice to be able to ask a pretty invasive and potentially controversial question, and get some decent answers ;)

ive had this once in the war section, i reported several posts from a person in an alliance and the mod who is also in the alliance closed all of them.

i messaged other mods and they concurred it was dodgey...

also clarkey if you knew they would get reported why did you post them... you are not worthy of modship... ive said it before and on gods nae ill be saying it again soon im sure :-"
