What's sniping?

I've heard it come up quite a bit, but I'm not sure what it is. How do you snipe some one? Is it effective?

Inflicting as much damage as you can having as little stats as possible.
For instance. My enemy has 10T strike, 10T defense, 10T covert (10m spies) and 10T AC (5m AC). I have 10T strike and a bit of UU to use for AC etcetera. I kill his stats. All I have is my 10T strike, which I sell off, or mass down on his defense. Either way, I end up with a good kill. He ends up with nothing to retaliate on.

That's what I understand sniping is. Older players, correct me if I'm wrong.

Man, that sounds really frustrating for the person being attacked. I suppose it's good sense tactically, but only if you want a weak account for long periods of time.

My understanding is that the 'art' of sniping someone is to momentarily create a devastating strike on what is essentially a statless, resourceless, planetless account for the purpose of destroying large defences before selling said strike back up.

Pretty much what Stuart said. The idea ultimately, I think, is quite simply to infuriate your opponent emotionally, not statistically.

Both of those are right, because they're essentially the same. I will admit to it being hugely frustrating but so many people do it and have done so for ages.

The term is thrown around a lot and most of the time it's aimed at players who's accounts will have a strike that is multiple times larger than their defense. For example a 1T strike and a 100-200bil defense. But as I said it's so common and a lot have been guilty of it at times.

I , originally coming from quantum, see sniping as farming someone while they're farming. Therefore sniping their naq before they can bank

The term we use for sniping these days is derived from a tactic of warfare whereas PLAYER A decided he or she wants to "war" or harass, comes with just enough strike to hit/mass defenses and has little if any in the kill zone themselves. You see this common with certain players these days that have 2-3 tril strikes and defenses barely if at all at 500b or higher.

Yes it is, and they are both legitimate types of gameplay. Just some people get upset over it.

lol I used to farm people when they were farming sometimes, it was so funny to see the PMs from them when they finally realised what was happening. Usually I stopped when they PMd me unless they were rude.

The term for that is "sitting on" I could be wrong.

People will have different interpretations of the word. For me that isn't sitting on because it was several hits over a duration of several minutes as they were farming. That is not sitting on. However, it could be thought of as sniping his naq whilst he farms. As I said, differing interpretations of the word.

My view of sitting on is massing what ever they have all the time, no matter the size

Yeah, my understanding of 'sitting on' is not allowing someone to build and just pulling them to pieces every time there's even an attempt at it. Also used as a rather deplorable form of bullying.

Or as a unsuccessful attempt to break the spirit of a bully...

Fighting fire with fire, yes. :smt023

Oh wait, EDIT - 'unsuccessful'? I obviously misread that. Now I'm confused and don't know what you mean! :-D

perhaps, a belief that a bully's fighting spirit can not be broken? 8-[

(one i strongly disagree with... anyone's spirit can be broken.)
