Street lights designed to spy on you, record your conversations and send that info with built in WiFi. they also have built in speakers so scum like that (as Alex Jones likes to say) 250LPS of maggot vomit Janet Nepolitano can bark orders at you whenever she feels like it.

Listen@4.28 when the narrator says "Intellistreets also offers a myriad of homeland security features".

And people think Eric Blair's (George Orwell) 1984 is just fiction, think again because you cannot make this stuff up!

"Countless people will hate the New World Order
and will die protesting against it."
-- H G Wells
The New World Order (1940)

Sits back to wait for the obvious!

I'm all for a smart light pole that's cost effective and energy saving...but i see absolutely no reason for having even minimal recording capabilities and speaker systems built into them UNLESS...they know something the general public doesn't.
With all the civil unrest going on around the world (i think i read that civil unrest is going on in 1 form or another in 80+ countries to date), it's not hard to figure it out to be honest.

As for the Orwell/big brother thing, i agree but many people don't know who the Huxley's were let alone read/watched Brave New world.

What a load of crap!

The company that developed these system may well have developed them for the reasons they state...but in an "emergency" homeland security and FEMA have stated publicly they will take over everything, including the emergency broadcast system (on 11.09.11-cant make that date up-they have stated they are running mock emergency takeovers of the emergency systems). if they are prepared to do that, well i cant see them getting skittish over some street lights.

+what KF said about how easy it is for some to abuse this kind of tech.

I agree, implementing such a system in an old city like London would be extremely difficult if not impossible without some major...erm...redecoration, shall we say.

Big Brother is getting out of hand. i know people who have been cabbies (black can and private) for a LONG time. they used to be able to carry a bat or other such deterrents and they were happy, the police didn't bother them about it. but since the guilty are now treated as the victims, it's all gone to pot, and now the Govt says this is for peoples "protection". why is a loss of more liberty always hand in hand with "our protection"?! i dunno about you guys but i don't need or want the Govts protection...PERIOD!

Meh, I don't use taxis anyway ;)

If it is the case that the recordings can only be accessed by the police following allegations and are only kept for a limited time, then I don't have too much objection. Taxis are borderline public/private means of transportation, and I know various taxi drivers who have been accused of things or have been attacked/intimidated, but with no way to prove their innocence or another's guilt.

I'm on the fence on this one...perhaps video recording is needed, but audio is perhaps going too far....

In theory, i agree with you and the assessment in the article...but knowing Govt and just how corrupt they are, would you trust Govt employees with a camera and a mic for ANY reason?
i sure as hell wouldn't!
