Why change servers?

The game has seen more down time than up since the server change. Turns not ticking over, stats not updating etc etc
What was the point in dropping the player count from 250 to 120 by changing to a server that's proving to be far more unreliable than the last one ever was??
And before some wiseguy mod does the usual 'no one's forcing you to play', 'SGW is a privilege not a right' post, please save your fingers the typing, my eyes are blind to those words

If memory serves the old servers crashed in a bad way prompting the change...idk if they had to be abandoned permanently but that did push Jason to switch to the new servers...

At least my ISP isn't blocked on this new server and I don't need to use anymore a proxy to access it!

There were very good reasons that forced Jason to change servers. However, as no-one can see in to the future it is extremely unfortunate if the new server doesn't turn out how he'd hoped and causes just as much if not more problems.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=110592&start=1170Just check up on the last few pages on that thread, think majority agree that problems seem to be getting worse as time goes by
2 turn changes after my post reporting a 22 minute turn change lagg I had another and actually had tried to wait 40min for the game to get back online (Yes over the course of 2 turn changes constant reloading)..
In the end it was half past 3 in the morning so left a large amount of stats ready for anyone to come and get it due to not being able to jump back on ppt..

constant reloading when the browser, or the server, or the interwebz no work seems to delay things...
i listen on MSN and boards for the first: "Game's Back"
then stop all loading pages, and reload the bank page and the armory to start.

That's why it feels so good to have retired.

Meh. I have seen far worse business decisions being made. A slight inconvenience.
That is all.

I'd say losing half your player base is a pretty bad business decision.
yeah he was forced into it no one disagrees with the move, it's the fact the new server appears to be set up in such a way as to almost constantly fail. I am also of the firm belief that the slowness on the old server was nothing to do with the server, but the total lack of database maintenance that gets ran on the game, not to mention a massive overloading from many, many pointless and redundant scripts that do nothing in the grand scheme of things.

A core part of the old server broke down. Jason, in his wisdom, decided that he might as well switch the servers then, than to first repair the old one, then go on to later on make the switch.
Some of the lag might be blamed on the new server being odd, while other parts can be blamed on the age of the game. Being as old as it is, the game has a lot of redundant code mixed with the problems that come from age. Unfortunately such is nearly always unavoidable. How many games do you know of with an age of over 6.5 years and such small technical staff as this one that work perfectly?

We thought of the same one, hence the note about small staff...
A game the size of WoW has enough staff to go through the code and purge all those old bits and pieces. It also has a much higher level of technical expertise, so they can more easily find the errors.
