Much has changed scince you were last there then xeno, we now have two types of uu, one doesnt appear to do anything, but is converted into the other at a rate set by your conversion tech. Its quite confusing at the moment

Indeed it has changed since then.
You now have Population Growth and Training Rate, both of which are upgradeable technologies.
Population Growth determines your Global Population. As far as I can tell, this lot do nothing (yet, at least). I would suppose they represent the total population of your Realm (afterall, not everyone is going to be a Trained unit, or even a Worker unit earning your Naquadria). Population Growth increases are also bought in huge lumps of 400. That might seem a lot, but it's not really when you consider that they don't do anything themselves.
Training Rate is the second upgradeable technology. The basic value of this is 1.00% of your Population Growth. For example, if your Population Growth is 1000/day, and your Training Rate is 1.00% then over the course of any given day you will be given 1000 new units, 10 of which will be "trained" as Untrained Units (or the race equivalent). Training Rate is increased in tiny amounts of 0.01% per upgrade. That might seem like nothing, but when you take into account the enormous size of Population Growth it can be quite substantial.
I'll demonstrate with my own account (shouldn't be a problem rules-wise guys, right? We're resetting in a few days...).
Spiderling Population Growth 1,800 /day
Spyder Training Rate 1.10 % of population/day (20Spyder/day)
You can see there that I get 20 "Untrained Units" a day. That is Population Growth * Training Rate / 100 = Untrained Units
Following through with my numbers, it goes 1800*1.10/100 = 19.8 (rounded up to 20) Untrained Units/day.
As yet, Global Population does nothing that I can tell, though they would be an ideal place for Raids to strike... Forum probably has something inventive planned for them.

Whoops, I have got it a little wrong. Your Daily Training Rate is actually worked out from your Global Population. That would make more sense, since it means that in time you will be able to get rid of the pile of units you've created...
