do they ever explain to us why everyone speaks English?

The movie made sense, as the people in first sg1 movie didnt speak english.. but why did everyone start talking in english..?

english was developped so late, much before the ancients left for pegases.. yet Atlantis ancients spoke english.

The simplest answer is usually the correct one and simply put If the show was subtitled most people would not have watched it, therefor aliens learned to speak English so they could get on TV :-D

I am certain there were various reasons, but as I recall there was many different people who spoke different languages but understood the variation of English.

It's easier for Ancients to learn English as it is for humans to learn Ancient. Ha!

It's television, not reality. Unlike Avatar. Or Twilight.

This issue was addressed by one of the writers in an interview on Gateworld (I think). He basically said that yes, each and every race should have their own dialogue, but then we'd spend half of the show with the 'foreign' race learning English before SG-1 could get anything done. It would become a little tedious after a while.

What you mean it gets in your head and alters your perception without even asking you ? Oh wait isnt that Rose's line :-D

I think it just goes to show that English should be the common language of the whole world since even aliens speak it. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it Euro-monkeys.

Its one of those nasty facts that no one can give a good lore-wise reason for. It just is. Even just using foreign languages would've been illogical. A language evolves quite a bit in just a century, and most of the displaced humans have been away for more than a millennia, or potentially even never been in possession of Tau'ri languages.
Do you have any idea what old Norse sounds like? Ancient greek? Babylonian? Then try to mix in a thousand years of random evolution. It'd be practically impossible to figure out. Making artificial languages for even half of the human factions would also be extremely difficult. You would probably need a number of professor-level linguists paid full-time for a good while to make it remotely right.
made-up languages that aren't planned well just tend to sound strange and wrong.
