Where DOES the money come from?

Ok....... Curiosity led me to do some research, and I don't know many intelligent or mature people who would know an answer to a question like this..

now,

A 30 minute show such as HOw I Met Your Mother's Stars (there are 5 of them), make between $90 000 to $200 000.. PER EPiSODE

Friends, Another 30 minute show. whose actors made 1 million PER EPiSODE, during their last season.

and thats the money going to the actors.. being able to pay that much to the actors will mean taht the producers make much much more than that and the TV channels would be making an insane amount from advirtizement if they are able to pay such a high amount of a 30 minute tv show..

My Question: WHere does this kind of money come from..? Surely 10 minutes of advertizement can't be worth that much. Its not even like 1 million per season.. its 1 million per episode to an actor.

With a show that popular, the worth of the advertisements goes up. Higher viewer count means more exposure, and you'd be surprised at how much companies put into marketing.

The rights to the shows.

Its like with music, everytime some tv company does a re-run or broadcasts it, money is paid.
Advertising money is paid to the tv stations.

So in short paying the actors is like an investment.
Purchasing broadcast rights is like an investment too (making money with advertising)

then there's the merchandise and the secret ads in the form of product placement ie Actor drinks a coke can or wears a designer label and don't forget the popular shows go global so it isn't just local businesses the shows make their money from.

Income streams to the producer / production company

1) Sale of broadcast rights, the first 2 or 3 showings can be sold to one channel at premium rates, then the repeats can be sold to other channels later at lower fees for years to come etc

2) Sale of distribution rights, DVDs and downloads

3) Product Placement ( Use of branded products in the show, and name dropping like when a character claims to shop at a certain store etc )

4) Sale of Merchandising rights usually under licence so anyone who uses the name and imagery on products has to pay for that use.

Income streams to the TV channel / broadcaster

1) Adverts shown in breaks, prime time adverts on channels with the highest viewing figures can cost several hundred thousand $$s for 30 seconds !!!

2) Premium rate channel subscription, viewers are only willing to pay for a channel if it shows the programs they want.

Whats gets me angry is broadcasters like SKY who put all the good TV programs on SKY 1, increase the subscription fee for SKY 1, then bring out a new channel like SKY Atlantic and move all the new good shows to that channel, creating a new subscription fee for SKY Atlantic and make cancelling SKY 1 as hard as possible. While at the same time having the longest advert breaks on TV, most 30 min shows are only 24 mins long and that includes 4 mins of intro's & titles !!!

The profits on these shows are obscene as are the actors salaries.

Advertisement is not about making purchases. It is about seeding minds with brand names, so that when you go to purchase something, you will think "I could buy the good and expensive 'Brand name' stuff, or buy the cheap 'No brand' stuff and buy another in a few months when it goes bad."
Simple as that.

If you do not recognise brand names when you are in a store, then yes, advertising does not work on you. If you do recognise it, but not buy it, then ha! advertising worked on you. ;)

Sorry, had to chip in on this.

Think about two and a half men. 200,000 was like for the boy. Charlie was getting, yes, 1MILLION/episode. And Alan was getting like 650 or something. That's 2M/ep (roughly). Clearly, the value of the advertisements on that episode a worth a VERY pretty penny.
