(Of course, we do not all behave like adults, but that is another discussion.)

Indeed. Some sort of basic regulation should exist, IMHO. But from there, the interpretation is up to the mod.

This is such a stupid issue, we should all be adult enough to act in a proper manner and know when we are going too far.

If we start filtering words like crap because it also means **Filtered**, then are we going to start filtering the words poo and dump because they all have meanings relating back to **Filtered**.

Creating this thread is just stirring up a problem that doesn't need it imo, and putting options like "No, profanity makes talking fun!" on there is not helping the situation whatsoever.

We all know that Jason wants the forum family friendly. And family friendliness implies that no profanity is to be tolerated.

Now, there is a sometimes a fine line what's profane and what not and it usually depends on the context. The forum filter cannot cover for that nor can it analyze the context. This is the job of the moderators.


The filter is supposed to filter words that are deemed profane. It serves to

1. prevent the general public to see "bad" words
2. lessens the workload of the moderators as the posts do not have to be edited
3. lessens the warnings given out for swearing


If it was up to me, I would get rid of the filter and let the mods warn for every profanity/swearing/cussing that they see on the forums. It would save the team the endless discussions about masking, trying to avoid the filter etc.

I don't see how filtering makes it any less offensive, the intent is still there.. and instead of the word being replaced with *filtered* should be deleted altogether.

I think a measure of judgement by mods is called for too, ie swearing at someone is worst than just uttering a swear word..

I got a full board warning over a link to a song that mentioned a word that would be filtered on here (though others had used the same word on here by masking it and those posts had stayed untouched) .. wasn't intentional cursing but I could tell someone to go get *filtered* the intent is there but isnt a warnable offence..

who and how is profanity defined?

I'm of the same opinion on these things. If I want to hear sick fantasies I'm quite able to visit a sex stories site. This boasting about for instance how gay you're is an insulting practice, insulting to gay people. Get real or get out.

The rest of your post I'm disgreeing with. Censoring something does make it less offensive, ideally the censoring is selfinflicted but in the case of hardline offenders their posts should be approved by mods before being shown for a while.

i once got a warning for arse, because ass was filtered. I got done for masking. il just turn american right?

I think certain words should be filtered, but it should be consistent. I started playing this game when i was 11/12. If i looked back and saw certain words being used back then, i would have been put off the game.

If it were upto me, there'd be no filter and no rules prohibiting 'profanity.' Better yet, no rules prohibiting 'profanity' but keep the filter, just enable the ability of users to disable the filter.

Crap should not be filtered.

"Profanity" is too broad of a term to use as a basis to enforce the rule. Using strict definitions to determine what is against the rules removes Moderators' abilities to determine intent and context in a post or comment.

I know you want this forum (and the world) to be black and white, but there will always be a gray area. It is up to the Mods to interpret such a gray area, and while this can breed inconsistency it sure beats warning everyone for every little emotional outburst (see Malx's definition).

A small minority in my opinion, but putting it on the poll lets me know how big of a "minority", and if it really is a minority.
