Do consoles/games such as xbox 360, PS3 have regions similar to DVDs meaning like UK game wouldn't work in the US?

Ok thanks, good to know. I'm gonna run a competition but needed to know whether it should be UK only or not. I have my answer now.

yes. though confirmed above all platforms (maybe not wii) have the region stuff.

NTSC - North America
PAL - UK
JP - Japan

there are others im sure...could be wrong.

it DOES NOT effect xbox-live/PSN play though, so if its over the net, and people are in different countries thats fine.

Most, not all, Xbox 360 games ARE region locked.

Most, not all, PS3 games are NOT region locked.

Most, not all, online games are NOT region locked in terms of who can play against who anyway.

So if I was to do some sort of competition for the Black Ops 2 game, then ID have to either open it up to UK residents only, or think of a way to work around it...

I read on some forums about people playing PAL games online being unable to play against NTSC games online.

Most likely you will end up with 3 pools:
European
Asian
US/Canada

EDIT: its rather plausible too though ... I cant really imagine someone from Asia getting a decent connection (low ping) with someone in Europe.

When I said competition, I didn't mean playing Black Ops 2 as a competition, I meant a competition to win the actual game when it gets released.

Ohw nice :)

Then simply try and stick to the NTSC / PAL prinicple

You got PAL, so I would just go for Euopean participants.

In the worst case someone could throw it on ebay or something and try and trade it for fitting version.

X-box games are region locked but I have Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe that I bought from the USA and all I had to do was create a new gamer profile while the game was in and it created an NTSC profile. I don't understand exactly how it worked but it did.

The only problem that'll be is for people who think gamer points mean anything and having all your points under 1 profile is the difference between life and death.
