I am fed up of Govt. the UK Govt has no problem with other people expressing their religious views, i don't see them banning turbans and what not. but if you want to wear a cross...oh no, we can't have that no can we!?!

Cameron IS a socialist and i am sick to death of all the major parties! Govt is out of control and needs to be reigned in before it gets violent...and things will get violent.

I hope they are banning veils/niqab/hijab/burqa at work as well then?
Otherwise it's just a proof of neo-conformist liberal well-thinking tainted with christianophobia policy if they are as selective as banning signs from UK's majority religion (christian) and leaving aside others (you say they allow turbans)....

The short answer, no, they are not banning any of those.

Edit, should have said this in the OP: this goes beyond banning religious symbols. i'm a non-practising Christian and have no opinion 1 way or the other when it comes to people practising legitimate religious beliefs...but if they can ban the nations religious symbol, what else are they planning on banning...speaking the English language? eating fish and chips??

The British Govt has already stopped the churches adoption practise because the Govt wanted the church to let Gays adopt and the church refused...if the UK Govt goes ahead with this there will (i would go so far to say "obviously") be a severe backlash.

Bans on symbolism should apply across the board or not at all

Im not a religious person, couldnt given a damn about Christianity or any others, but I do support peoples personal freedoms ( so long as those personal freedoms dont harm others ), after all this ( UK ) is 'allegedly' a free country.

I dont see wearing a cross as any different to wearing a political party badge, both openly display and advertise that you support a belief system


BUT on veils/niqab/hijab/burqa, I think these should be banned in some places, not because of the belief they represent but for the same reason you cant enter some places wearing a Crash Helmet or Balaclava, for the purpose of security and identification.

I do like how a good headline overrides peoples ability to actually read.

If you look a just a teeny tiny lil bit closer you will find that no one is 'banning' the crucifix.

What is being said is that employers can choose a dress code that prohibts clothing and/or jewellery that is not a requirement of a persons faith

And like it or not there is nothing in the bible that commands people to wear a crucifix, therefore it is not a primary requirement of the faith. This is in contrast to say the Sikh religion that requires followers to wear certain items of clothing & jewellery and says so in their holy books / texts.

Assuming you are not a navy seal or an underwater demolitions expert where wearing enough bling to sink a battleship is a defo no no, or in a job where wearing such items as simple jewellery constitutes a hazard...nobody has the right to tell you what you can and cannot wear.

Also keep in mind that allowing people to be people makes for MUCH happier and more productive workers.

This is a very important argument that often is overlooked. Back in the days of Commodus, Christians laid claim to all sorts of mundane icons (such as the torture/execution device, the cross, or the fish, or bread, or sheep, or .. think of it, they used it in their communications, much like Le Résistance in WWII -or indeed any group of organised partisans in any conflict-). If you were to ban all these symbols, you would be censoring 1985-style (yes, that is 1 degree worse than 1984!), for the simple reason that people will always find new symbols to (ab)use for their own purposes. Either way, **Filtered** political correctness. If you want to walk around naked, you should be free to do so. Only thing I support is banning anonymising clothing, such as a balaclava or the 'hide teh womenz'-things medieval people concocted. They are a danger to society. Trifling crescent moon jewelry, David's Star's or crucifixes are just jewelry. Anyone who is 'offended' by that should get a lobotomy. Yup.. I like the argument, KF. Sorry for ruining it.

No one is banning anything

No statutory government legal instruments are in use here

Only contract law. Which makes sense as you sign an agreement with your employer when you start work, this agreement will outline what the company expects from you & what they will do for you. Dress codes if they are to legally enforced must be outlined in this contract, and of course any change to the dress code must result in a new work contract.

If an employer wants to have a dress code that prohibts the burka thats up to them & yes at the moment they can legally do that if they wish to, even without this case going to the courts.

The Gov is taking it to the courts to give employers a lil more backing in this matter, if you sign a contract you should stick to the agreements in said contract.

This shows how little you know about the world of manual labour KMA, working in places like Oil Rigs / Power Stations / Press Forming Plants / Car Manufacturing / Mining and other such industries will see you work in places who ban all jewelery, no matter what it is as they can catch on machinery and lead to serious accidents / injuries & in some cases outright death!

Yup.. if my boss has me sign a contract which states I am obliged to wear sun dresses when the Sun is around, that is fine.

What if you want to work in Tesco's stacking shelves (because you are a heavily indebted student holding a worthless diploma or maybe because you have no ambition in life) and the contract states you cannot wear a cross but the Paki ( no offence intended to anyone buy i will not abide by PC) stacking shelves in the next isle can wear his turban?


There may not be a Govt or national ban...but does there really need to be one when you have a Govt that is so willing to kiss the backside of every big corporation/business??
