Mercenaries

Does anyone know how mercenaries work. Do they need weapons? What do untrained mercenaries do and can they be trained independantly of bough ones?

Feel free to search for the newest info. on the forum on htis topic(which is what I did...don't have the time right now to explain stuff, and sorry if me suggesting a search seems rude or you find my post unhelpful, it was not my intention), maybe search for info. from the last week to ensure the most up-to-date info.?
