How many people are actually playing?

Just curious because I decided to login to an account I had from the beta test, used up the turns, and am now ranked 4th...I know the aim is to ascend not to rank up, but just curious how many people are actually on here?

Most people are focused on ascending instead of rank.
Besides, the ranking is based on all of these factors:

Defensive Action? 910,000 Ranked: 16
Covert Action? 140 Ranked 515
AntiCovert Action? 140 Ranked 503

Godly Tensor? 36,855 Ranked: 76
Training most troops into Ascension Helpers gets you ranked rather poorly.

Yeah, but 1) I'm surprised people aren't building up massive naq stockpiles to try and speed ascend and 2) I'm surprised more people aren't bothering with ascending and just want to play on the server...

NewGrounds is based around ascending.. the ascensions give a rather substantial boost to an account.
