What are the differences between a geek and a nerd?

I am curious, what are the differences?
I see the stereotypical nerds in series/movies and I take that nerds are the "extreme" version of the geeks, even though sometimes both are confusedly use-mixed which led me to this thread (the confusion often noticed).

Opinions are divided (trust nerds to argue on something like this...), but this chart is pretty good:

So I disagree with that chart.

not when you consider social skills to be a form of street smarts... and why not? ;)

I've always thought of it along the lines of a geek being right into the culture of something.
Nerd would be someone obsessed with the details and more academic side of things. An example would be a geek being a huge fan of Deadpool comics, while a nerd could tell you all about the ten step enzymatic process of glycolysis. This is only my personal interpretation. I'm not sure what urban dictionary says.

Nerd in my opinion is someone who's extremely good at something, then you are a nerd in that area. For example, person A is a master on Linux systems, he's a nerd. Person B is a master on Windows, he's also a nerd.

Geek how ever is not that, he just likes to play video games and watch Sci-Fi. He can be good on computers and that area but he can also be bad at that area. But still a geek.

IMO the nerd is smarter. Geek's can often be pretty useless. (they don't have to be though)

You dorks.

Taken from the Star Wars official page from Facebook, I suppose these people are what one could call nerds.

Nerds are often purely academic, single mindedly pursuing career and educational pathways. Geeks are often intelligent but it is not a rule of thumb, being a geek is usually being obsessed with a certain something without everyone losing every iota of respect and love for you... IE. I am a history geek. Geeks are tolerable in general, the majority of the group are media geeks (like the Big Bang Theory for example).

Its only confusing because they're like Atheism and Agnosticism.. they can cross over when you get to the 'light' areas. A geek obsession may make them a Nerd, a Nerds single mindedness may be focused on something socially accepted as geeky.

The difference is Nerds are similar to people with high level intelligence and autistic traits and well geeks are normally more normal in their characteristics.

From what I know, geeks are those who like school and study all day, nerds are those who play games all day and/or are obsessed with one/a-lot-of games.
Dorks are people who can't fit into common society for one reason or another.
