i have no weapons and i have an attack . i attack something and it goes down ???

Motherships give attack & defense.

And you're guaranteed to lose at least 1 MS per attack - down to 9 anyway

Yes.

so my starting attack after i ascend goes down ? and when i upgrade it it will recover

When you're MSes die your strike goes down but you'll can grow it back by purchasing what MSes you lost.
You'lll always lose at least 1 MS unless you're attacking with 9 or less. So that's important when farming.
