Speed Massing

There are several ways to perform a speed mass ...

This is not a feature ... its a bug, because the code to prevent the enter button from being held down does not work in 2 known browsers after applying a certain trick ....

But here comes a kicker ... the speed massing is bugged in itself too ..

The hits are not getting processed in chronological order ....

I did tests on the development server, and here is a little example

02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,667 12,931 1,721,359,023,780 12,421,184,309 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,576 11,853 1,529,968,414,105 10,123,111,505 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,486 9,617 1,088,307,714,820 5,844,500,694 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,399 8,208 870,936,470,198 3,993,156,211 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,314 4,595 633,348,500,727 1,626,437,903 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,231 0 468,718,618,468 6 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 3,151 0 116,539,328,635 6 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 5,362 27,011 5,579,033,159,710 83,278,700,678 details
02:58 XXXXXXXXXXX 0 Naquadah stolen 15 5,228 29,764 4,677,846,579,740 76,999,400,998 details

Notice how the defense suddenly goes up again after it was gone DURING the speed mass

last hit before zeroes:
214,482 Super Guards have Targeted Black Holes

first zero:
Super Guards have what it takes...
126043 Super Guards came unarmed!

second zero:
Super Guards have what it takes...
129274 Super Guards came unarmed!

first hit AFTER zero:
132,588 Super Guards have Targeted Black Holes

second hit after zero:
135,987 Super Guards have Targeted Black Holes

No, the defender was not around and did not build anything.

I would suggest everyone stop abusing this bug immediately ... until a proper solution is offered to correct and prevent this.

I had a long discussion last night with Robert over this, to tell the truth all we could come up with was placing a minimal Nox delay to the game for everyone, 0.5 or 1s delay between attacks regardless of war settings.

Personally i do not like the whole mass someone in 10s method of play we have these days, it doesn't take any skill and there is not anything a defender can realistically do to stop it. I prefer some tactics and skill to be involved in battles.

As for the reasons why some attacks go through before others then that is to do with the way the browsers send the pages, the internet sends the data and how the server processes them. Data packets do not all get sent at the same speed, it only takes a slight delay with the routers sending the data to the server for a packet to be received by the server after one that was not delayed. When you are forcing so many attacks through so quickly then it can often happen that attacks are processed out of synch.

Would not call it a bug as such, but at the same time i would like to see things slowed down.

yeah it depends on certain factors ....

But, it is a bug in itself .... there is a special piece of code in admins work that prevent the enter trick form working in IE and FF ...

atm, those who use chrome and opera are actually bypassing it when they apply their trick ....

I remember doing it with chrome back in the day, lagged like a **Filtered**, you could speed mass for like 10 seconds with a request rate faster than lightning and continually refresh your attack logs and see the attacks finally getting processed. Drugs ftw.

well the enter trick works in FF just fine, however FF does deal with web pages in a different way than the other browsers so it is actually a lot slower at sending the page requests to the server. FF waits for a server response before sending again, the others do not which is why most speed massers will use Chrome or Opera.

yeah the piece of code that prevents it does not work properly.
Its a piece of code from 2005. Lots of updates and changes since then on browsers, I think Chrome didn't even exist then..

If I am not mistaken a new piece of code will get added to the dev server soon, preventing this in all browsers ;)

Some adjustments have been made to the development server: http://dev.gatewars.com

There are 2 special limiters placed to prevent speed massing abuse.

Please feel free to try out and mass people on the development server and leave some feedback here about your findings.

If you are pro speed massing ... please don't complain here, speed massing is not a feature, it was/is a bug.

Actually, I believe Jason approved the use of this about 5 years ago...

I cannot be bothered to look it up...but it is currently not a bug...just like clicking the mouse a lot. There is no exploiting!

You are mistaken Field Marshall

Performing the trick executed 100s of hits in mere seconds ....
While there is a clear defined function in the code that should prevent it .... in the two mentioned browsers it, did not work .. that was a bug

The new approach is very likely to get implemented on the main server too, so grab your chance to test it and add feedback which might cause adaptions before implementation.

ive tried it out on dev. With Chrome which i use, i just held down and still get a fair few turns in. It still works just all in time limits (15 tab enter)

Exactly, it still works, a bit .... but no more mass downs in 10 seconds ;)

It's called bring back talents. So that onliners will actually mean something.

100 hits with one click or automatic script... please. That's not skills!
