This system is the better one of the two; yes, it does require manual action, so the ban lasts 'ban time+day or so'; but that is better than not being able to communicate (for appeals) while banned.
People just need to consider that -because this requires manual action- things could take a day or so longer to get unbanned. Tradeoff. Worth it.
