I recall a while back somebody describing the difference between good and evil on this game.

I think that's shifted, massively of late and wondered about others thoughts.

Other than the obvious evil HVE...who are the good guys and who are the bad guys?

Depends on your perspective on good and bad really. Break it down into different segments and see what comes up.

There are those that could argue that over the years DDE have been the bad guys along with mH and OE from the FUALL days (or even before but that was before my time). You could argue from the perspective of those alliances however and say that TLE, TAF etc were the bad guys for fighting against them.

But I've gotten to know many people across all those alliances over the years and while players have disagreements and people don't get along there are never really set bad guys, I'd say they're all combined good guys as they've driven updates in the game. Whether you agree with updates that have been put in over the years or not it doesn't really matter look at when which major updates came in: Most came in during major wars notably plague limit being changed because of Fericide and planet defenses being nuked because of Blahhh etc.

From that perspective you'd have to say the bad guys are the people of HVE like FM said, not driving major wars with some of the big accounts in game and thereby not driving new updates to be implemented out of spite

As usual I lost track and probably switched arguments halfway through there but I think I blurted enough text for someone to complain about what I've said in a way that won't really interest me.

P.S. TL and mH haven't gone to war yet this year, I think it's a record

I'd like to second Dmonix's post.

Over the years a large group of players outside of the major alliances have seen DDE as the bad guys and for example TL the good guys fighting them. Another large group has seen DDE as their friends and good guys, fighting terrorists such as TL.
I remember during my time in TL, I'd get lots of PM's (even still have some of them) from players offering resources and telling me how great we were for standing up to SGW's bullies, the OE. But I'd also get PM's saying we were bullies and evil.
For me it seamed almost 50/50.

So it all boils down to perspective - but I think over the last 2 years the game has changed a lot, specially in regards to politics. I don't think the old description works anymore.

I'd say now, everyone's a little bit of both. Aside from HvE, who have unspeakable evil.

Back in the Mists of time HVE used to Rock .. it snowballed into evil

no real paragons of virtue left, only 50 shades of grey left now

There's still time yet!

Bad guys, DDE, Ricos, mH, OE and TL. TAF are the closest to good as good guys can go in GW. Then... theres just the rest.
