Definition of a martyr?

I've been wondering about it for a while and thought where better to ask then here.
I always thought it was someone who "died" or "ceased to exist" if you like. So surely if they cease to exist, and they are helped by the people they are proving a point against, they are only furthering their cause.
Such would be the case with Saddam Hussein, the way they publicly executed him only angered his followers and resulted in so many more bombings and terrorist incidents causing major loss of life and completely destroyed any community spirit that could be potentially be built.
So what are your thoughts on the way such incidents should be dealt with?

define a martyr, someone who gives their life for a cause. Their deaths inspire the cause and it grows beyond their wildest dreams and takes on a life of its own.

I don't think they necessarily need to die, I am thinking of that very brave girl from Pakistan.. who was shot in the head for simply wanting to attend school..

Someone that is persecuted for their beliefs, or appears to be so. They don't have to die, they just have to suffer. Be it jail, or torture, or death, or some other attack against them.

He said 'trying to play the martyr'.

Quite similar to possums, I would guess.
