Check this quote out by the ultimate pacifist...or so history tells us!
"among the many misdeeds of British rule in India, history will look upon the act depriving a whole nation of arms as the blackest."
-Mohandas Gandhi
But the anti-gun people say they only want to ban certain weapons and have some more strict controls on licensing, registration and background checks, that's reasonable isn't it!? no it's not. history shows that those have always been the first steps to total disarmament which always leads to total tyranny. that's historical fact!
Yea, Canada is a total tyrant.
I agree with the assault weapons bans, simply because there's no reason for them in civilization. Sure we could have argued otherwise in the years before, but we're not in the era of self protection over societal protection anymore.
With that said, I think the reasoning is wrong. This whole "US is filled with gun lovers that's why there's violence" POV is flawed. Look at UK's violence rate and you'll find out that doesn't hold up. Death by assault rifles is around 5% in the US. More people die from punches and kicks.
The issue should never have been gun laws. It should have been violence reduction. There's a difference, and arguably, the latter isn't being considered cause the former's more "loud" and "exciting".

your talking about banning weapons and equipment, such as "high Capacity" magazines, when everything covered under the written ban is 2%, 3% if you include rifles of all actions. one automatic weapon that was legally purchased (like most people would think of when the words "assault rifle" are spoken of in relation to a gun) has been used to commit a crime, and it was committed by a police officer. automatic weapons are not a problem, and are already highly regulated. nor are semi auto "assault rifles" or "high capacity magazines" the deadliest shootings have taken place using pistols, a majority of them actually involved weapons that were NOT covered by any of the bans in place.
Stats since 1984 using "assault weapons" and "high capacity magazines"
The "assault rifle" that was "used" at sandy hook, was pulled out of the trunk of the car that lanza had driven to the school. both pistols that were used have standard clip sizes of 15 rounds, and when you are talking that it takes 5 seconds for anyone who has any expirience whatsoever with a pistol to change the mags and get firing, it doesnt matter how many rounds are in the clip when there is no one there to take advantage of the lapse in seconds (with it being a gun free zone).
so the next latest shooting, the Wisconsin temple. shooter was ex military. probably was still practiced enough to reload in less than 3 seconds. gun free zone

june 1984. Illegal immigrant to US. 14 round magazines, of which first was emptied into a single person, and the second was dispersed among the crowd. escaped the scene and was caught hours later.
http://www.nycrimecommission.org/initia ... otings.phpall of these shootings listed took place with "assault weapons" either because of clip size or type of weapon. but I think we can draw other similarities.
- 30 here of which 7 were in areas that were even possible gun allowing zones. 23 were in obvious zones such as federal buildings and schools.
- 25 of these were committed by people whom were known to be mentally unstable prior to the incidents.
- most incidents lasted 5 minutes or longer before being brought to an end.
- only 2 incidents averaged more than 10 rounds per minute, which with a 10 round magazine would be a shot every 4 seconds and 20 seconds to reload, more than enough time for any dummy to accomplish the same thing with 10 round magazines. leading us to believe that a 10 round magazine would have created almost identical results.
- Even looking at the shooters, in 24 of the incidents, the shooters were either registered democrats or grew up in a household of democrats.
-not a single one of these involved a bayonet, so why are bayonet lugs on the list of things to be banned?

I dont blame you for your thoughts Daku, but I think you have been misled as to the true nature and impact of "assault rifles" most people dont know any more about them than what they see in 1) movies and 2) news, and the latter nearly always portrays the guns used in these incidences as the same ones you see in the former, with gun toting guys firing off hundreds of rounds at each other just with a single pull of the trigger.
The target for this 100% should be focused on responsibility. Responsibility with regards to everything we do. responsibility for your actions. In many of these instances, irresponsibility is directly linked to these instances. Losing your job for stealing is irresponsible, blaming someone else for you not having a job is irresponsible, not having your guns secured is irresponsible, allowing someone to be the target of a bully is irresponsible, being the bully is irresponsible. the list can go farther still, but the thing that needs to be put back into the society in the US is RESPONSIBILITY.
