At some point you will start getting attacked (income above a certain threshold / activity under), you might then want to build at least some defence. Also, when you are attacked and have no (or a small) defence, your priests get killed. Up to 10% of them at once.

Haha, maybe. Na, the thing with Ascension is that it is a quest for power.
