I want it.

I have 3680 PMs. Finding the things I need gets .. tiresome.
So yeah.. just saying. Would be useful.

Maybe you should delete some PM's?
Though, in that case it's similar to Email and most Email Providers have a search function.

Similar to email? What? :? No man, I am talking about the PM system here, on this forum. What email? It just sends the title of the messages. That is not enough.

Destroying information is a crime I will not commit, not to mention it is extremely impractical. When you weave a multi-layered web of lies the way I do, you will realise that you need to keep a record of what you said to whom. [-X
On that note, if we could download all PMs to our local machine, that would be a good alternative too. I could then create my own search function.

It is bad enough that I lost almost 400 PMs when our former colleagues were deleted.

I'm not saying make it email. Make it LIKE email programs. Gmail has a nice search option. I mean that with that many emails, It's similar to email in the way it would break it down.

We could dramatically cut down on PM #s if they were compressed into "conversations" similar to gmail's settings.

My box was starting to delete past emails, so I had to go through and archive everything I could into a separate folder, just to hold onto things.

Easy solution, but as a Mod/Admin, there are a lot of pertinent conversations had via PM which we usually have to come back to, even 6 months later. At least, that has been my experience.

You said nothing about 'making' things anything. You said 'it is'. :-k Otherwise, I would be fine with it.

Exactly. ;)

Well the first would solve the second... but a search wouldnt hurt.

Few tweaks perhaps...
1) Keep an 'chain' as one PM, instead of multiple (best comparison would be Gmail in that regards I suspect)
2) Including an search button for author and keywords (title and/or content).

Allowing people to create new folders would only slow down the forums I reckon... it tends to be slower/at max capacity sometimes already at times if I have observed it right...

Yes. Threading. Like a forum. :P

This would slow down the forum immensely. You have to imagine, that ALL words in ALL PMs for ALL users would be added as keywords to the database.. the damned thing is 4GB at the moment (mainly keyword tables). With all PMs added, it will go to 5.5/6GB. The size of the DB is the reason why we do not update (often).

Hardly. PMs are not stored in keyword tables. A post like this one is about 10 times as large in the DB as a PM of the same number of characters.

Errr... OK. Search function would be a bad idea then... 33% increase in size would.... hurt.
Edit: Wondering. Why did you request an search function in the first place then if you knew this, LOL?

I learned this since asking for it (as you can see, the thread is 10 days old..). Jason explained to me why it would be a bad idea.

Hm.... too bad there isn't a convenient way to download PMs as a batch from a forum (say, in a backup way of sorts) as a user to read them back and save them. Or is there?
Because if you can download it, there's always a way to read it out with another program :-k

That would be perfect. :) There is a way (that I know of), but that would be a download of all PMs of everyone. Not something you would want. :P

But yes, a simple 'download all' button in your PM box, which gives you a csv export of the PM table restricted to your account (both send and receive), would be a good thing to have.
(Send, because seriously, 600 PMs saved in the Sent Box is just way too few; especially since many of those PMs still exist, but in the inbox of the recipient.)

Depending on the last time the forum software was updated, this might be applicable.
