Untrained Mercenaries

Other than making it look like your army is bigger than it is, do untrained mercenaries have other benefits?

They give you APP when you ascend but some argue that the actual naq used to buy them gives higher APP. Whether that is true or not they are kind of a novelty really. I've seen a lot of people try and keep 1337, 666, or 111111 etc. quantities in stock.
I observed one player last year that tried to make as many of his stats show in a recon as some sort of variation of 1337. It was kind of amusing but then I remembered it isn't 1996 anymore.
