well my friend...I have a feeling "quickly" passed years ago. I haven't played in a while (well okay started back up in August but before that it was about 4 years) but I have a feeling it's been going on for a while....hell..maybe it always was and I just never noticed it. Stranger things have happened.

I've been off for a long bit. I'm suprised it was every entertained in the first place.

I say never ever reiburse for attacks. Someone somewhere had to allow this to happen for so many now to think it's the norm.

normally a part of when your alliance is NAPPED with another alliance. Been around for years, but I don't know of it being used much outside of nap type agreements... some extorters used to try it on in the past though.

My alliance leaders used to broker NAP breaches for me cause my go to response was "Build a defense noob."

The first player to mass me in this game (late 2006) was a well known and popular alliance-leader of the past, famed for his very aggressive stance which led his alliance into many many wars. He massed me because I had been silly enough to take a planet from a friend of his (not in his alliance). He had a talk with my friends, we explained our responses and his choices, following this he agreed to pay a compensation package to cover most of my losses. I was happy and no-one else got massed.

The moral of this story? Repayment of damages has always been a way to resolve hostile situations and prevent further conflicts. The choice is usually simple, you repay what you took from me, or I take everything you build for the next XXX months/years. In the vast majority of cases, it's far cheaper to choose the repayment plan rather than the ongoing war. And that's without factoring in escalation to the point of alliance/empire wars.

I probably can site a hundred or more examples of where reimbursement has been used to resolve conflicts in this games history. It is one of the key diplomatic tools on both sides of a table and it's uses or refusals to use have been influential in starting and ending wars, keeping peace and even the rise and fall of alliances and empires.

As Norbe said, it has been around for quite some time.. with one small specification, generally repayment only works if the parties are able to hurt each other substantially, or have an agreement in place to handle unilateral violence. It can never be an assumption that someone is going to repay a massing, simply because -as Norbe outlined- it is the possible end result of a diplomatic process, never the start of it.

Why would it be assumed that because someone masses you, they are naturally going to repay your damages? (Sure, it makes sense when a NAP is in place, but I get the impression Ze is referring to random people without diplomatic affiliation.) :)

Free game though. Anyone is free to request anything off you but that being said you can just as well tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine, as it is your right to do so. The freedom goes both ways.

Extortion has been part of this game since the beginning really.

this is it right there.
in the end unlike many other MMOs you can lose everything spend a few hundred trillion (in which many players can farm in a day or two) and they are back.

Also many of the people who do this have a much bigger account, so their losses will be less. (mothership/cov&ac). on another note, that is part of the game you can hit them back, also unlike many other mmos with a new account. Losses would be ugly but you can.

And because they can ask anything they want. How you respond is your choice.

Respond with a massing.
