how do you stop being your own commander??

You could just change your commander to someone else.

Or do you mean just not having a commander at all?

Have you tried dismissing yourself? Been a while since I had myself set to commander, and I ended up just getting a real commander instead.

Likewise it has been awhile since i had myself as com...but as said, try dissmising yourself
