Stargate Attacks and Irises

This is a post I made in response to the 'Tauri iris' thread - thought I'd give it a thread of its own - I only thought about it in the last few minutes so feel free to add to it, make suggestions.......
The point is - whoever said the attacks are coming via the Stargate???
The Iris is, however a good idea - which could be implemented if gate addresses were to come into play.
For example.....
You would need to open the iris to send a team out to attack via the gate (not current attack methodology) - a new feature could be that while you have a team out attacking the iris must remain open for a certain number of turns - giving a window of opportunity for an enemy to attack through the gate (if they have your address).
At present it is not even clear if Stargates actually exist in the game - atatcking seems to be done via space travel (X-302s are too big to fit through the gate).
So we could start a new thread of attack/defence - you have to purchase a Stargate to allow 'Stargate' attacks (as long as you have someone's address to attack) and then you could later purchase an iris to stop enemy 'Stargate' attacks. Use of the iris would have to cost a significant amount of naquadah in order to ensure that it is not left on permanently - and would also have to remain open for a specified number of turns (2-3) following a 'Stargate' attack on an enemy - giving a window of opportunity for others to retaliate, exploit your position.
This could even introduce SG-Teams into the game!!!

This seems to be making some other game out of this one. A simple text interface and the proper system would make a good game out of the idea. Perhaps a map, too.

Yeah, would love a gate, gate addresses and a map, possibly even more than one planet per person, although you would have to conquer it.

So are you saying that before you can attack someone you would need to find their address(at least to go through the stargate). Maybe there could be a time delay on the interplantery attacks that dont go through the stargates if they are implemented. Not too long, but to even out the playing field between using the gate and/or not.

Normal attacks would still be carried out as they are now - these would be differentattacks through the gate - perhaps some sort of specialist attacks with a particular target/objective (SG teams as i mentioned before)
I like the idea of a delay for interplanetary atatcks.

Hmm, I don't. You send an attack at someone with a nice 3M and by the time your guys are there, he's already banked it. Not funny.
Well, something completely different then. This is just a thought I had on this in a vague moment.
Limit planetary assault range. Can only attack 100 ranks up or down.
You can buy a stargate. This increases your reach to 250 ranks. You can upgrade the stargate to an 8 symbol gate to remove any rank limits.
You can close the iris, raise the forcefield or whatever applies to close your gate. This will prevent anyone outside your planetary range from attacking you. This costs a good % of naquadah per turn. If you don't have a stargate yet, you can't be attacked through it.

Please, no!

It's hard to find people within that spectrum that have a weak enough defense for my asgard attack, this would imbalance the game, for the Tau'ri would gain an upper hand, as if they already haven't.

Well of course all the races would get their version of a iris or protection at the gate. Asgard=Thor's Hammer and I am pretty sure that the goul'd have one and if not then we can make one that goes along with the one that the Ancients have on Stargate Atlantis.

Sorry to repeat this I just copied and pasted this from the tauri iris thread- i think having an iris would be cool for all races. The goa'uld have had force shields on there gates which Asgard could easily produce and reps could just form there blocks over the gate. This would mean to attack someone you would have to upgrade your siege tech to have a ship to attack and it would slow down advancement through the ranks. Also your attack rank would go down you could choose on each attack to go by ship or gate or both and you could only use the appropriate weapons. You can't take death gliders through the gate and targeted gate weapons can't be taken on ships. Also I was dissapointed when I upgraded to a hatak and lost my alkesh, I wanted both.

hmmm ok the stargate thing is a good idea but what about the motherships?
if you had a mothership would you also be able to attack any rank after all you could transport your own troops
