The Complete How to: 'Forum BBcode' FAQ guide
Posted: Sun Jun 04, 2006 3:31 pm
I have decided, after seeing so many people wandering these forums who are clueless how to fully use it. So I dedicate this to all those who are clueless
Just remember in this post, a "*" (a.k.a. an asterick, anything related to this will be highlighted yellow) is added to demonstrate how to use the function. If I do not include them, then you will not be able to see what I mean because the function will be posted correctly. Excuse my humor and my 2 cents, it lightens up the read and helps people learn better, as it is remembered more clearly.
How do they do it?
Section 1 - URLs/links/hyperlinks
When I browse around, I find too many sigs with "My trade feedback is herebegames.com/stargatewars/myfeedbackYAY." Or some variation of that. Well, those will soon be days of old.
Read this and learn LOL. Our little journey begins here. First you will need your link. Fetch boy! Now that you have it you will need to add tags to it. [url*] ones to be exact. Put the [url*] (*cough* remove the asterick when you really post it) in the front. Then put a [/url*] at the end (with all BBcode, the / inside a tag ends what ever corresponds to it that was opened.) Once you are finsihed, congratz on your first link
.
Solved in simplest terms:
Step tres yields http://www.stargatewars.com. And lmao, I just noticed you can type stargatewars with only your left hand.
Ask nicely?
Better. Now in order to do so, you will need to do is switch things up. Instead of [*url]http://www.stargatewars.com[/url*], you will need to add a "=" and the url inside the first [*url] but WITHOUT spaces (very important!). E.g. sample one:
Yields sample two (without astericks)

Section 2 - Images
Too many times I have heard:
Its quite easy (no, that is not me)

Just first thing is first. Keep in mind what kind of picture you want to post. Before I tell you how to use, I will quickly run through the basics. Its in your best interest to keep in mind what will get you banned.
Some Image Guidelines (mostly common sense)
**Its ok to post the url to picture if its too big, but warn anyone that its big
Now in order to post an image you will need to host n' post it. Meaning you cannot post images off your computer (unless it is a server connected to the internet, not just any computer jacked into the web. Whats a server? It hosts data. Is my computer a server? If it was, you would be well aware of it, otherwise keep reading). Hosting? WHERE? Image hosting is not difficult to be found. One site that is quick, easy, and free is [url=imageshack.us]Imageshack[/url] (<- now you can do that
). They host your images for free (under guidelines # 1 and # 3 there, no ** exception there tho). Just follow the instructions and you are well on your way to showing off your image! Once you have filled fields and hosted the image, copy the link they give you for later use.
Now, posting your beauty. So, with the link that you got from your hosting site, you are ready to post it. When you are in posting mode you will need to include image tags (they are [img*] and [/img*] tags, remember what the *'s are for). The first one means you are posting an image, the second you put at the end of the link for the image.
Like so:
[img*]http://www.oxihosting.com/11/WTH%20pict ... mcones.png[/img*]
If you took the astericks out of that, you would get the picture I posted above. The actual steps after this are the steps of constructing your post with your picture after hosting.
The only thing that really falls under this topic is posting images as hyperlinks. To do that you will need to post up an advanded url (once again, that is [*url=mylinkyay.whereever]custom text YAY[/url*]). Only other to do there is replace the custom text with the linked image (with tags), and bon appetite.

Section 3 - Adding fancy touches to posts
I will explain, just this section is more advanced so make sure you know how to open and close tags before reading. I will list off stuff and their functions. The beauty is you can mix and match these just about to your hearts content.

Solved in simplest terms:
- 1 - So paste your link into the field. My example will be "stargatewars.com"
Step 1 - the plain link wrote:stargatewars.com
- 2 - Now give it its tags ([url*] as the beginning, [/url*] as the end and the link in the middle)
Step 2 - add tags wrote:[url*]stargatewars.com[/url*]
- 3 - Post it! (generally I preview all my posts first to make sure it works)

Some Image Guidelines (mostly common sense)
- 1. Avoid posting large images** (posting a 1600 x 1200 pic is a sure-fire to baeked angry forum dwellers and mods)
- 2. Avoid posting too many pictures in a post (Think, overkill)
- 3. Keep images 'appropriate' for the forum (absolutely NO pornographic or offensive material!)

Section 3 - Adding fancy touches to posts
Demonstration noob wrote:I can all that, now how i colorify my posts?
I will explain, just this section is more advanced so make sure you know how to open and close tags before reading. I will list off stuff and their functions. The beauty is you can mix and match these just about to your hearts content.
- Color
To add color to your posts, use [*color] tags. Only thing special about them is they require "=" and a the color, in words or hexadecial colors. Hexadecials are [*color=#X] whereas X is the letter/number combo found on the tables. NOTE: putting the word 'colour' instead of 'color' will mess up the code.
Examples, two with each variation
Sample 1 is word colorSample 1 raw wrote:[*color=red]RAWR IM A MOD[/color*]Sample 1 complete wrote:RAWR IM A MOD
Sample 2 is hexadecial (once again, reference tables here; hexadecial offers a lot more options)Sample 2 raw wrote:[*color=#E3170D]RAWR IM A MOD[/color*]Sample 2 complete wrote:RAWR IM A MOD - Bold text
To use bold text, simply put the text inside [*b] tagsSample raw wrote:[*b]im so BOLD[/b*]Sample complete wrote:im so BOLD - Italic text
To use italic text, simply put the text inside [*i] tagsSample raw wrote:[*i]tilty lol[/i*]Sample complete wrote:tilty lol - Underline text
To underline text, simply put the text inside [*u] tagsSample raw wrote:[*u]to the point[/u*]Sample complete wrote:to the point - Quotes
To quote someone, use the Quote button at the top right corner of the post. Other you can create your own with [*quote] tags (never EVER take anything inside a quote tag as said, they can EASILY be forged). Use an "=" then text inside quotations is the person's name.Sample raw wrote:[*quote="Demonstration noob"]Hay guyz![/quote*]Sample complete wrote:Demonstration noob wrote:Hay guyz! - Lists
You can create lists with bullets at anytime by using [*list] tabs. They add one indent per list and bullets can only be added in an open list. Bullets are special, they have no opening or closing tabs, just a one time use [.*] (I used a period inside the bullet tag because the bullet tag is only an asterick inside brackets, check the examples).Sample raw wrote:Demonstration noob wrote:To ascend I need:
[*list]
[.*]1001 Glory and Reputation points
[.*]and the minimun requirements told to me when I get there
[/list*]Sample complete wrote:Demonstration noob wrote:To ascend I need:- 1001 Glory and Reputation points
- and the minimun requirements told to me when I get there
- Code
These tags are just another thing that is exactly like quotes but for quoting code (Yes, Ismayek, you are in this; and I quoted him from here, I posted it in red because all his posts are in red)Sample raw wrote:Ishmayeck[BadWolf>me] wrote:[*code]int main(void)
{
while(true)
{
worship(buck);
}
}[/code*]Sample complete wrote:Ishmayeck[BadWolf>me] wrote:Code: Select all
int main(void)
{
while(true)
{
worship(buck);
}
}

Section 4 - Troubleshooting errors
More often than not, our beautiful code does not work
Mainly its because of spelling errors or none closed tags. It requires going over the post which is why the preview button should be pressed before submit. As I noted before, color tags -need- the word color inside the text, colour will -not- work. One other common error of mine isError sample 1 wrote:[img]myhost.com/mypicyay[/url]
I do have a tendancy to open with one tag and close with the wrong one. Another one is to open with one and open instead of close with another tag, or sometimes both of the above. Mainly you have to go over it, whether it be two or ten times until it is right. Keep your eyes and avoid
