Do you have to have weapons for each unit?

Today is my first day. I was wondering if you have to have a weapon for each unit (and vice versa). Do your units man the weapons or are they independent of one another?

Yes, one unit per weapon.
Preferably you'll use mercs as you get more money, because untrained units generate naquadah.
I'm fairly new too. So, glad to help.

simply put, you DON'T need a weapon for every solder, you need a solder for every weapon. i perfer to have excess solders around to help man my weapons after casualtys take place.

i only started afew hours ago and its harder then quantum so im now someones officer and i get about 60000 naqu every turn from him and when he wanted to help me get started he gave me 11000000 naqu iv only got about 15 units but anyone who underestimates me will find out what upgrades a made.
when i attack someone who made an army and didnt get good weapons i can win with 1 troop in otherwordsget 1 unit and then get one of the 3 best weapons for him try getting attack troops first so you can attack and get naqu for defence

Thanks everybody. That advice has worked well. I do have one more question, though.
Does it do any good to have extra defensive mercenaries around? I know they can step in to man a weapon if the one manning it gets killed, but, aside from that, do they have any other benefit?
The reason I ask is because I have a bunch of extra defense mercenaries. And, before I buy weapons for them, they seem to have already increased my defense. Also, I've attacked weaponless enemies before and still suffered casualties.
So, my question is can defense units effectively defend even without weapons or do you have to arm them for them to do any good?

defensive mercs(and troops) add a miniscule amount(ie 4) to your defence rating, same goes for strike troops/mercs.

Okay, now I have a question. What is the point of untrained mercs? From what I can tell, they just stand around looking stupid all day.

once upon a time they had a use, now it's been shot, so for now, their only use is to transfer naq if you don't have supporter status.
but that is pretty useless for those commited to this game, cause they spend their money on ss anyway.
so essentually, no untrained mercs have no use yet.
