Your commander may have just lost some of his officers.
They may have just changed Realm Alert after obtaining a large amount of untrained, boosting their income, and, inturn yours.

So, wait, do I have this right?
Getting Officers increases your Unit Production
Having someone as your officer gets you more money.
Right?

Wrong.
If you have a Commander he will pay you anything from 10, 20, or 30% of HIS turn income, shared between you and his other officers. For this in return, the Commander gets 10, 20, 30% of a troop from you every turn. Once you have an officer it will tell you your
projected troop production after allocation of Officer/Commander bonuses in
brackets after you
base level of unit production.
IE: if you have a daily unit production of 400 and no officers, 400 is all you will see on your command page BUT if you have an officer you will see another number in brackets AFTER your base unit production thus.. 400(416) this means that you have 400 units per day but with your officer at your current wage setting you will ACTUALLY produce 416 units in 24 hours.
There are plenty of other posts on this matter and even a FAQ section.. when will you darned newbies learn to use the SEARCH function of the forum eh? You think i have nothing better to do than answer a question i have answered every single day for that 6 months of my life?
