same with me, though it seems to be in most atk reports, so maybe changed wording

that's the thing, though
it doesn't appear in all logs. nor does it always appear with the same person.
and when it does you don't make damage to shields (supposingly)

I'm getting it too. Any reports I have that have blown through the extended shield defences have damaged the enemy mothership's fleets and attack weapons (sometimes there is no damage, but I'm assuming the shots still penetrate the shields, they just don't cause damage).

Anything other message and it's only the shields that take damage(or take no damage if the enemy attack is really low).

Basically, I think it's a 2 stage process.

1. Both motherships fire. Shields take the impact. If there is no shield "penetration", thats it, both motherships retreat. Standard message on the report! If there is penetration, proceed to stage 2.

2. One or both motherships penetrate the other's shields. Damage is calculated on attack weapons and fleets (potential for zero damage to be done even with a successful "penetration"). That's it, both motherships retreat. "Blowing through extended shield defences" message on the report!

I don't know if that's right, but it's my guess :!:
