lol id consider myself a fairly experienced player at this stage however I dont get the advantages of having mercs can you do anything with them????

Well..
Untrained mercs are completely useless;
Def & Atk mercs are cheap replacement for their Supers counterpart, but they die way easier & give less power than a unit you would've trained.

attack and defence mercs are basicly meat shields and reduce your super casualties, at least thats how i use 'em
