Is chance involved in sabotage?

I know that when attacking, both the attacker's attack rating and the defender's defense ratings are modified by a random percentage (up to +/- 50%). This includes an element of chance in the attacking business.

do the covert ratings also get modified in this way when sabbing? Is chance involved in sabbing?

I believe rank modifier plays a role as well, especially when sabbing.

Rank modifier only affects the amount of damage you do when sabbing. I have never seen it matter when sabbing someone of a lower or higher rank in the success or failure department.

You mean "Rank modifier only affects the amount of damage you do when attacking"... right?

I've never noticed rank playinig much part in sabotage either. But then I've only sabbed ppl a dozen times since I started playing.

Try sabbing someone way down the ranks, with just enough spies to destroy 1 weapon (normally). You'll see that you succeed at sabbing, but you get a message telling you they destroyed nothing, there were no weapons or your spies are lying. That's because the rank modifier affects the damage dealt, and reduces it to less than was needed for the weapon, so nothing is destroyed.

This is certainly something I'm going to try.

Why aren't these type of things mentioned on the updates page?
Or have I just missed it?

*goes to re-read the updates page for the umpteenth time*

Thanks for the pointer Sleipnir.

umm... (at the risk of sounding like a complete newbie )... how do I figure out how many spies to send so that I don't end up blasting the poor fellow to kingdom come?
