Anyone upgraded yet? I will be in the market for a shiny new PC within the month, and everyone is offering the Windows Vista upgrade as an incentive right now. I have't seen it demonstrated yet, so tell me. Is it really all it's cracked up to be?

It's all that, and so much more. It can tie a cherry stem into a knot using only its tongue, run a 3-minute mile, levitate pyramids, cure cancer, make a delicious clam chowder, do your taxes fro the next 10 years, play with your unborn children, create everlasting beauty, play the harmonica, remove lime and rust stains, invent the wheel... again, butcher a goat, speed up time, slow down aging, beat you at Checkers, let you win at Chess, walk the dog, kick the cat, clear up acne, polish brass, invade other countries, feed the homeless, crack a brewski, kiss your booboo and make it better, save for a rainy day, render human life obsolete, explore under your sink, speak Hindu, find Osama(hint: think Cleveland), mix the colors purple and yellow, win the pole at Daytona, make a pretty girl like you, and will vote Republican when you tell it. ALL HAIL BILL GATES, MASTER OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE! ;-)

I can already do that, the 3 minute mile will be beaten when we learn how to fold time, my MS is a levitating pyramid, that would be handy because cancer sucks , I don't like clams, who pays taxes anyways?, not having any more children, everlasting beauty is boring, my 4 year old son can play the harmonica, I would like some lime in my vodka thanks, the wheel is overrated when your levitating pyramid MS has VTOL, I already have some butchered goat in my back freezer, time flies anyway, who needs to slow down aging when you are a 4000 year old Goa'uld Temptress, I win at Checkers and lose at Chess, dont have a dog, my cats dont like being kicked, I am too damn old for acne, I only have silver crystal and marble in my house - brass is for ship's bells, I invade other planets , the homeless can eat each other, beer sucks - I said I want lime in my vodka NOW, my symbiote kisses my booboos for me, it doesnt rain in Perth much but I wish it did, human life will be obsolete once I have conquered you Tauri, my sink is already charted territory, I speak Hindu if they are worsipping me, Osama went through the iris to P3X-487, purple is too nice to mix with yellow, Herbie wins the pole at Daytona next movie, I already have had pretty girls like me (pun definately intended ;) ) and vote Apollo.

So what's in it for me?

MS will be able to view all the files on your pc and prevent you from using your hdd by encrypting & locking out the data under the terms of the vista EULA.

Also under the EULA you don't actually own your copy of the software, MS do you are are just 'renting' it so to speak, they can force updates with or without your consent. They can also remotely reboot your PC to make these updates active.

On the whole vista is a big steaming pile of turd. I do have other problems with it but these are the two main things that really mean I'll not be upgrading to vista at all and instead I'll stick with XP until they discontinue it and then instead of having a dual boot system I'll just have Linux only, a hardened version as well.

that's what they said about XP when we were still using 2000 and besides, if it performs better I'll gladly spend the odd $ to get some more mem or a better cpu

in my books thats equivalent to Breach of privacy and hacking.

i had the Beta test version and it was quite frankly awfull. None of the sound drivers worked and to be honest its not exactly anything special. Also as is always the case, it will be the most popular OS soon and as such there will be more viruses targetting it than any other OS.
