I've been wondering how exactly do they work?
After i buy one..do i activate it right away..or only after my planet is stolen do i activate...because as i remember the beacon disapears after you use it!!

noone knows really as of yet.... maybe in a couple weeks after people have done some serious checking/testing of it, you might get a full answer. atm, all anyway really knows is what the updates say.

Well I bought one for my planet and used it right away to see what happened.
It told me the current owner, what the planet was currently called, and whether or not the planet was in normal space at the time.
So I'm going to guess that after someone steals it from you, you can use the beacon and it will show their name, current name of planet (however in the bug section someone said that the name of the planet was the old name and didn't update when the new owner changed the name of the planet) and whether or not you can take the planet back now.

that's pretty cool,
this means, in wartime, if you dont wanna lose your planet, install beacons, abandon them and after 24 hours you can check who picked it up with his MS and take it back, right??
could that be done?
and could it be done, later on, if the war would last, like say a week??

also do the beacons tell you how much def is on your previous planet, wihtout you checking it by spying?

They wont say defences.. only who the owner is and what its doing atm.
As for abandoning all your planets in war time, if thats what you want to do, but it might be a bad choice when it comes to rebuilding defences and what if one of your planets fall into the possetion of a very strong player?

yeh that's true, i don't know what i'd do, havent seen real war yet, thank god for that
i don't know, losing em to slightly chanced stronger players or losing em to players with whom you are at war (guessing they would be strong players too, more chance then the first)
i was just brainstorming a bit about possibilitys

In theory, yes
Abandoned planets go back into 'space' where exploring ms's can find them. if the fleet power is above the planets defence you can caputure it with defence intact (as it was abandoned) but there is a very small chance that it will be the one you wish
beacons really come into use when players pass around planets. you can let them do this then recapture after a time has passed

GAT- I doubt it
how would you find something (presumably) buried in something as large as a planet?
