What does it really do? If anything? If not, what's the point of having one?

it shows how many planets you have compared to others.... so you know if you have most/ least/ avg amount of total planets.... so technically now UP does count into your rank....

ahhh i c, ok cool thanks. for a while i thought it might have been something somehow somewhy (?) resembling glory and reputation, but then again, we're already ascended, how much higher can we go?

Does it influence anything else?

i.e. does it provide some sort of modifier in combat as it could be viewed to improve morale or something like that.

Well...in the future, there will be something called initiate revolution... perhaps that the higher influence is, the less chance the revolution will be successful

Speaking of which, if you never found your own description page, there is a "relation : Love" (for me, at least). Apart from being obvious we love our ascended selves, is that prone to change depending on our actions?
Like sending too many times your worlds to certain death would make them love you less?
Or is that just to remind you trying to declare war with yourself is dumb?

who in there right mind would ever declare war on themselves
