the number of planets that u have trained into assination, intel, def, or atk worlds. That excludes untrained and labor planets. But the other number outside is the total number of planets u have

As long as they can see your number of planets...

I need to revisit this question because the answer isn't matching up with what I see. Some people show number of planets ###(xxx), others (fairly high ranked) show only number of planets ###. Does this mean they haven't trained any planets? And why is the figure listed by my name so outrageously high? I've added up my number of planets and even the number in the parens is higher than my total number of planets.

Depending on your covert power, and that of your target, you'll either see ?????, ##### or ####(xxxxx).
If you don't see a number between brakets its either they don't have any trained planets (unlikely) or your covert isn't high enough to see that information.
"super" 5 planet clusters count as 5 planets in your total, so 200 "supers" is really 1000 planets. Thats probably why your count is off.

Okay...so, if my covert is really bad (compared to theirs) I'll see ????; if it's not as good as theirs, but not all that bad, I'll see ####; and if it's better than theirs, I'll see ####(####). Gotcha. Thanks!
I'll have to do some calculating, but I hadn't counted them as 5 so that's probably where I'm off. Another question, if I may. Is the number outside the parens the total number of planets, including the number inside the parens ... similar to the notation for miners/lifers in main? In other words, if the number is 1000 / (750) that means there's a total of 1000 with 750 of those being trained?
Sorry for the simplicity of my questions, but I'm still pretty much a rookie at Ascension. Thanks for the help.

If you can see the DMU your covert is better than your opponent by a large margin. (about 3:1) It takes even more to see army size.
The army size is notation is like Miners in Main.
Hope that helps.
