*sigh* Both wrong, unless god, you're being too general.
In a nutshell, untriane duntis don,t directly affect your rank, BUT:
Untrained Units (aka UT or UU or untrained) count towards your income in the following ways:
The income is defined this way (in main):
1. 40 naquadah income per untrained unit (50 for Goa'ulds)
2. Having a commander will increase your income by a percentage of the commander's income divided by the amount of officers
3. Having no commander will give you a 10% bonus to your income
4. Having officers will decrease your income (but raise your UP), depending on which percentage of your income you give to your officers
5. Realm alert level is used to decrease income but increase covert defense.
Untrained units only count towards: income and army size count, not rank. However, they can be trained into the following:
1. Attack units
2. Defense units
3. Spies
NB: all units count towards army size. Only untrained units count towards income.
1 attack unit can wield an attack weapon and can be upgraded to a super attack unit, these are expensive but have half the death rate and do double the damage. These units also count towards the maximum mercenaries allowed.
1 defense unit can wield a defense weapon and can be upgraded to a super defense unit, these are expensive but have half the death rate and do double the damage. These units also count towards the maximum mercenaries allowed.
1 spy cannot wield any weapons, but counts towards your covert action. How much they count towars your covert action is defined by your spy level, spy technology and race. These untis cannot be upgraded and the only way they can die is when you sabotage go on any covert mission and fail.
I hope this has answered some of your questions, if you have more questions, feel free to ask.

he asked if UU had an effect on ranks, directly, NO.
