I bought a dell lappy, and I'm wondering... what should I delete?
I already deleted the obvious dell games, Jukebox etc.

but I have other stuff in my add/ remove programs list:
DellSupport {Do I really need this?}
Documentation and support launcher
Games, music and photo launcher
Media Direct {Why is there a button on my laptop for this program. I don't want media stuff! Windows media player works fine for me!}
Microsoft works {deleted now}
Outlook addin setup{I don't use outlook...gmail}
URL Assistant
User's guide
And a bunch of Roxio stuff...o.o {I wanna be able to burn...but is roxio the best solution?}

keep dell support
keep outlook you sometimes need it for some progrmas to run right since there tied into the same files
Roxio is an ok program but there are alot of better ones out there too
I have no clue what media direct is

in all truth .. i would clear out the whole laptop . start from new. i work for a firm and i will say we never keep their image on our laptops. to much crap running in services that do not need to be there.

is the lappy brand new or is it used?

There are many... many... XP bloat removal tutorials on the net.

As for removing junk... This program seems to get good reviews (even if the name does not inspire confidence) but i've never used it: http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier/

The thing is, i'm not sure how thorough you were... you say you killed off the obvious stuff... but does that include XP's own bloat? Have you gone the msconfig route and killed off some of your startups?

From the list you've got, I don't know if anything really needs to die.
I personally might axe the user guides, but i'm not running a dell, and don't know what that'd effect. (ph3ar my Compaq)

The media direct button can actually be pretty cool; supposedly you can change the shortcut, and have it launch a program for you at the click of a button.

Obviously, if you don't go that route, and your not using it as it was intended... I suppose it can go.

Bear in mind, this is all coming from the guy with an IGP and old athlon

DAMN you bought one too soon!

Should've waited untill they start shipping Linux preinstalled on their systems. No bloat for Linux is the supreme God of teh Universe.

Linux isn't 'teh supreme God of teh universe', it's meant for a certain use, so is Windows, so is Mac OS =S Everything depends on what you plan on doing with the machine.

Dont install linux

Installing linux most probably voids your warranty HP have set precedent, And dell would most probably do the same, because they can't guarantee support for your distro of linux and drivers can be damaging (software damaging has been proven by programs that wipe harddisks to the extent of completely killing them)

Also, if you don't have a problem with piracy, you'll want to remove all of those programs and replace them with better ones (With the exception of dell support obviously) For example I know many good places that you can dl Alcohol 120% or Nero, both of which are better (IMO) than roxio
