respect etc.

Ok, so I started a thread putting up a thesis based on my own observations. I generally stated that many people on the forums seem to have their difficulties in seeing the difference between attacking someone’s personality and making sarcastic remarks about ingame happenings. I further claimed that the meaning of respect is often misinterpreted on the forums.
I said that I don’t think this is a good thing for the community as it is killing the fun and the role playing (or what ever was left of it).
I did not direct it at anyone personally.
My post was very respectful.
I made clear in the very first sentence of my post that I am not encouraging disrespectful behaviour at all.
I must say I was shocked to see where the thread was going in 13 pages of posts. People started pointing fingers, personal insults were thrown around, almost everybody was flaming each other…
This was certainly not what I intended with my post but it does make one thing clear: the issue I described in my post does exist. People have been showing once again, that they are reacting overly sensitive and are confusing personal things with game related things.
I have moved that thread away because there is no point in giving people a platform to tear each other in pieces in the name of respect.
It is quite disappointing to see such a reaction to a thread that started out respectfully with the sole purpose of discussing the use and misuse of the term respect.
Sad, really.
Oh and this thread’s purpose is to offer a second chance to have a discussion about the above described issue. If it goes the same way as the old thread, then it will also find the same ending.

I think its down to each persons own persona to be good or bad or abit of both. That way we find out who the bad eggs are, instead of masking up somones attributes for long periods of time.
A forum should be about being yourself and doing your own thing, not following someone elses guidelines.

Resect..... apparently a touchy topic.
First you have to realize several things.
Its a 2 way street. sure some (most i hope) will offer you a certain amount of respect if we dont know you and or of the bat, but to get more, you have to give us respect.
Also, you have to think about not only what you mean, but how its received. For example, geisha might make a coment in jest about an alliance she is massing, which is taken personally by those it was intended for. Or a group of frionds are posting on the forum, and one makes a joke to the other that they both know is in jest, and yet when someone else sees it, it seems to be some horrid abuse of the rules.
And people do have different standards of what respect, and insuts are, what one person might not find insulting could very easly be insulting to another person.

A game is a structured or semi-structured activity, usually undertaken for enjoyment
Definitions of enjoyment on the Web:
* the pleasure felt when having a good time
Definitions of pleasure on the Web:
* a fundamental feeling that is hard to define but that people desire to experience; "he was tingling with pleasure"
Definitions of good time on the Web:
* a highly pleasurable or exciting experience; "we had a good time at the party"; "celebrating after the game was a blast"
In all seriousness though the topic was not just those who take the game seriously and those who do not, it was mainly referring to their actions on the forum, for example, making complaints about FoE (Foundation of Evil) being referred to as PoE (Pretenders of Evil) claiming it is a personal insult, now for starters, this is a role playing game, I doubt they actually claim to be evil so they are role playing as evil, role playing is pretending. If they are in actuality evil and I offended them by saying they are not, then I'm quite sure that they then cease to be evil, what kind of evil people get offended by that and then complain? This as I said is just an example of the sort of thing that is happening now, pitiful complaints about inconsequential things that lead to more and more of the same.
I am under the impression that the primary function for this forum is as a medium for interaction between the players, alliances etc that exist in the game (StarGateWars) role playing does/should have a place here, poking fun at "players" not people should be expected, WITHIN THE REALMS OF DECENCY! It's
harmless fun.

I fail to see nothing, if someone is hurt by being called pretenders of evil then I have zero time for them, to entertain the idea is ludicrous at best.

if that was the only possible insult you saw, then you are blind indeed.

For the last time, I was giving an example of the sort of thing that tends to be the trend now. Pathetic complaints of so called insults.
Just to help you out a little Charles...
Definitions of example on the Web:
* an item of information that is representative of a type; "this patient provides a typical example of the syndrome"; "there is an example on page 10"
* model: a representative form or pattern; "I profited from his example"
