i think being rude ingame isnt called for regardless who is doing what. i think its rude and childish. of course words are words and only have as much power as you give them.

my advice? tell your friend to blacklist the childish player. i dont cotton to people who act like 5 year olds in a game. we're all here to have fun and taking the game seriously to the point that you get angry enough to talk down to someone and be rude to them just isnt called for and IMO is bad sportsmanship/playership. i think its bad fellowship in general and ones army size should NOT be used as a moral compass to dictate your behavior towards others, whether you're a new player or a veteran there's just no reason to do it.

i do have a question though. how did this situation begin?

just mass em. problem solved. until they go cry on the forums.

I totally agree with the above, being rude to others is just plan childish, its only a game, to many people get to personal and can say some really hurtful things. Me i would message him politely asking him to stop sending such nasty messages asking him to explain the reason for it.
If he gets rude and nasty to me, i will be rude and nasty to his defence.

I'd ask them to stop and if they didn't I would hit them a few times to scare them a little and if they didn't stop I would give my friend what they needed to deal with it until it stopped. Or just give my friend enough stuff to look scary to the rude person.

No message, just mass. Depending on the degree of it.

'Chat' with them, if they are rude to me in the same way I would take action in the form of a massing

Well, seeing as most / all of my friends can handle themselfs, id help in the massing of said person...
