Better to be Feared or Loved?

I was thinking about this earlier today. Is it better, in the long run, to be feared by everyone or loved by everyone as far as how you will advance in the game, both in pure account benefits and in overall strategy.
I'd love to hear from some stronger people who have been on both sides of this.

Most people who are feared get too cocky, and done over....However some are feared by the masses, but instill close friendships with others...To be loved is something different, and to advance in the game is probally politically better...

Ideally its both but if you must choose 1 its better to be feared because ppl love themselves more than they ever will you in the long run

Yeah i agree with sore, being feared helps with the protection of the ones that you love.
So a mix of both.

Its better to be loved. Its only a game. If you cant go to war with someone you love and be massed by someone you love you take it the wrong way. Just mine any ways.

I like a balance. I love to be loved. BUT I like being feared by those that done wrong.

Love and fear is good. Fear gives you a sense of respect with the ones who love you. One of my officers the other day made the comment I am the greatest CO he ever had and how much he loved me. At the same time he said something along the lines of 'You really have no clue how many people fear you.'
To me that is respect. I think we get fear and respect mixed up in this game.
