0, no interest in meeting anyone in RL. Besides a select few, just to see if they are actually playing from the psych ward.

I know that there are a tonne of players in the UK who live in each other backyards, yet have never met. Why is that? Not interested enough? Don't want to leave the computer and miss a turn change?

You only say 'backyards' because of the stupid size of Australia. Us Brits are quite accustomed to our short distance friends seemingly being a long long way away, and where the Australiasian Isles are concerned, well, we're talking astronomical distances that bring tears to the eyes. I don't think it's anything to do with people being interesting enough. Well, maybe.
