Best/Worst British Prime Ministers

Yes yes, I'm shamelessly pilfering Come_Forth's idea about best/worst US presidents and applying it to my own country. I think it has the potential to be an interesting thread.

So, to get the ball rolling..

There are lots of Prime Ministers I like. Benjamin Disraeli, whom I credit as one of the first truly crafty political politicians. William Gladstone, whose social reforms changed Britain forever. Clement Atlee, who founded the NHS. Or David Lloyd George, who just kicked ass. Picking one is sort of hard, but my all time favourite has to be Winston Churchill. An amazing orator, an amazing writer and an amazing wartime leader in general. Churchill was as inspiring as he was witty. He was also a very human character, which is something I like in my politicians.

Worst? Probably Anthony Eden for being completely naff during the Suez Crisis, or Stanley Baldwin for turning a conveniently blind eye to Germany's dangerous behaviour during the thirties.

to quote barney from the simpsons
Lord palmerston!!
ok seriously i agree with the view that churchill was the best, he was exactly the right wartime leader we needed. although as has been said clement atlee did make the NHS but still i am afraid it has to be churchil for this quote
"i may be drunk miss but you are ugly! in the morning i shall be sober you shall still be ugly!"

worst i agree chamberlain just didn't know how to fight a war. although funnyly enough one of our defeats under chamberlain was with a naval battle, when churchill was in charge of the navy.

but chamberlain i say is worst

Yeah, Chamberlain takes a lot of flak for his appeasement of Hitler and the way he behaved in the lead-up to the Second World War. I was listening to a poll of best/worst Brtish Prime Ministers on the radio a few weeks ago. It placed him worst by a considerable margin.

However, a friend recommended a book for me, which was about the 'revisionist' perspective of Chamberlain. The book claimed that he only appeased Hitler because he knew Britain wouldn't be ready for a full scale war, and that he was in fact biding his time and allowing us a arm up properly. The book tries to present him as an effective strategist who knew what was coming and prepared accordingly.

Not sure I buy it.. but it's still an interesting viewpoint.
