don't you usually need a publisher before you really need an agent? i mean, agents can find publishers and all, but...

For fantasy novels, most publishers need you to have a literary agent, because the field of fantasy is so diverse, and full with different ideas, they sorta need a second opinion.
I suppose its not mandatory to have an agent, but believe me when I say it sure as hell helps get the publishing. Not to mention all the publicity and finance etc etc..
But no, it is customary to get an agent first to represent you to the publishing companies.
