The Origin of sayings...and random facts..

Well I thought I would share some random knowledge with you all, as I am the eternal fountain of a priori and A posteriori knowledge. As such...

The origin of 'I got it down the grape vine'
A saying referring to receiving a piece of knowledge or here-say. (Rumours.)

It originated in america from wine vineyard's several hundred years ago. Basically, without the use of phones, people needed to pass a long messages without making it so amazingly obvious. EG sending some dramatic horse with a wax sealed scroll etc etc... So people used to use the vines of the grape plants to either leave messages for others to pick up, or they would move the vine, in turn moving the message with it, to deliver the message. There by someone would receive a message down from the grape vine.

The Origin of 'ok'
A saying referring to everything is alright. Commonly used in most of the western world.

This, as far as I know originated in either china or japan, where it used to be a military command/abbreviation for 'everything is calm' or 'everything is ready'. It was spelt differently (I cant begin to imagine, ooooh kay? lol) and so, when everything was calm or settled the military leaders would use OK, and in time people from the west would pick this up. (ie WWII) and the word got around!

The Origin of 'word on the street'

a lot simpler then any of the others. Originates from maaaannnyyy years ago. When it referred to the huddled masses of the commoners on the streets and in the press. SO basically those who lived and generally spent most of the days on the street. The people who mattered for votes etc. Originally 'The word out amongst the streets'.

General facts about memory...
Your short term memory last's at maximum 15 seconds, only very exceptional people ever have it longer. You can store between 5 and 9 things in your STM (the rule of 7 +/- 2)
You only remember things that you deem to mean something to you personally or you consider very important. (Which of course is taken from your STM after its maximum storage length and converted to your LTM)

Another random fact...
Your more likely to be named a saint then win the lottery.
I can find a lot out about your personal character by your description of a house. (not quite as easy as that, but basically yes.)

WHY am I writing this, cos I can and have a spare mo..lol. Some could be wrong, but I have no reason to think so.

I believe OK came from " 0 (zero) Kill " meaning everyone was still alive while doing the roll-call in the end of some battle. At least it's what I've heard. But in the end it comes back to everything being alright.

Indeed. I wish we could watch back in time to know certain things for sure, and to verify others like that xD
The Zero Kill origin was told to us in a Philosophy class, gotta love the teachers making tons of not-so-related general culture capsules during class xD

But then again watching back in time would show us how bad we fail daily not learning from certain errors.

xD With us we discussed how the world was going to end, and spirituality, and lots of things. At the end of the course we had a pretty good idea of how humanity would fall ;D
