i think debts better for america, gives us more money to help raise our GDP and pay off the debt faster. Plus once we get out of iraq, the amount of extra money that will flow in will be insane.

it's more or less like in a financialy healthy business:

debt/equity = between 0.5 and 2

Well no but hell man it makes us the world super power. Powers not in weapons or arms anymore, our economy could collapse and our people starve but we'd still be up there with the most powerful nations on earth simply because we could destroy the entire world in one salvo.

So in the modern world money is what shows a super power, it shows the countries power. For example, if any country in the world had a modern army like ours and went into Iraq, a large majority would have a hard time keeping up the costs, the many billions a year we shove into that place.

So yeh, pretty much Money is the way to ascribe power.

Still, a country can have gazillions of dollars and still be an ass.

Might i suggest, in the interest of comparison, you all check the figures for china....The only clear competitor for the title of world superpower with the USA...Then again, i wonder how the EU ranks as a whole...Those would be some interesting figures.

To be fair, China spends nearly everything it makes. But yes they are the only sole country up their close to being competition. However I have the feeling that China will never make it past being number 2, too many bad issues, especially in exporting.

As for the EU, its not fair to compare America to the EU, if we could get 32 countries near us I.E. Canada, Mexico, Central America. We'd have a far larger GDP :P

Ah but the EU has gathered... some amount of countries together, so the here and now validate buck's point.

Thats my point, a coalition of countries compared to a single one is hardly a fair assessment. Mind you the EU has shown to be a giant baby when it comes to Russia and its oil.

I guess it really depends on whether you view the EU as a single entity or as multiple states under a continental government.

I never understood debt...who do we owe money, and why should we care? If we've amassed that big a debt, then it doesn't really seem to matter anymore.
